Mobil 1 Extended Performance noisy?

08 Civic, Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W-20. Honda filter. Car has 15k on the odo. Currently has about 5K miles on the oil. Oil level is full, hasn't been topped off since it was last changed.

Noticed yesterday what sounded like some valve noise and the engine running somewhat rough. This was after being fully warmed up on a highway/city drive for about 25 minutes.

Wondering if anybody had any similar experience. I'm gonna change the oil tomorrow with Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 and a fresh Honda filter to see what happens.

But anyhow, I doubt the oil is making the car noisy. I've never experienced more noise with an engine due to the oil being used. Doesn't those Hondas require valve adjustments? If so, that may be why it's noiser and running rough.

My Hyundai has Hydraulic Lash Adjustment and it made all kinds of noise with the Amsoil 5w30 XL-7500 series oil. I switched to their SSO & ASL as well as Pennzoil Platinum and never had a problem. Some engine just are fussy, mine is one of them.

While my car was in warranty I use Mobil 1 5w30 and never had any noise.

At 7500 miles I changed the oil in my Mazda 3 2.3L to Mobil 1 5w20. It was louder. Went back to Valvoline, it got quieter. Not to say Mobil 1 is a bad oil at all. My motor just sounded a bit louder with it. If I do use it again, I'll try a 5w30.
I used Mobil 1 for several years and was very pleased with it. Also been using valvoline for years, very pleased with that as well.

i have a 07 civic and use regular Mobil 1 5w20 wix filter and i dont think i have much noise coming from the valvetrain but i do notice when i change the oil the engien is quieter.

i want to switch to Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 also , so let me know how it works for you, thanks

Nah, I'm not bashing M1. I have used it in my Legend for years now without problem.

If I didn't like M1 I wouldn't have used it in the Civic. The Maintenance Minder on those usually doesn't get down to 15% oil life remaining until 7-8k of city driving. I liked the idea of the EP for a longer, city driving, mid-winter interval.

If the valves already need adjusting at 15k, that's pretty weak. Frequent OCI's with good oil the valves shouldn't even need to be checked until at least 60k.

Like I said, I'll swap with PP and see what happens.

I don't think that Mobil 1 is a bad oil... I think it's great I just prefer Amsoil. Mobil 1 never made noise in my fussy engine, but Amsoil XL-7500 did, and the ASL doesn't ??? Dunno.

I have PP in there right now with a ARX cleaning phase happening, then I'm going to rinse with PP then I will run PP for a couple of OCI's then do a used oil analysis to see how its holding up.

I think I might just stay with PP, because I like what I see so far and it's cheaper.

I have a 1988 Cad El Dorado with a 4.5 l. engine. It was noisy with ANYTHING including Mobil 1. I have used Mobil 1 for the last 80,000 miles and no problems. Still noisy. John--Las Vegas.

Maybe it has some fuel dilution, it has been really, really cold on a few mornings in the last couple weeks. Car doesn't get driven far enough to get fully hot when it's -20 outside.

I think it is amazing how many threads are coming up where people are asking if using a snythetic makes the engine noisy

The V6 4.0L SOHC engine in my 63,000 mile Ford Explorer is known for a timing chain rattle, there is even a TSB on it. The rattle is worse when the engine is cold, but one can sometimes hear it hot. My truck had it but not too badly, although it occasionally was loud.

Recently I switched to Amsoil 0w30 and the rattle has been all but banished. One can faintly here it every now and then but never at the volume level it used to be at and for many weeks I can't hear it at all. As far as I'm concerned, the Amsoil just about completely mitigated the issue in my truck.

The EP is more dense than regular M1. PP is about the same density as the EP.

Seriously, Mobil 1 5w-20 silver cap made me perk up my ears and listen to the valvetrain every now and then. Let me know how your engine sounds on Pennzoil Platinum 5w-20--I'm planning on using it on the next OCI. Pennzoil 5w20 conventional and Mobil 1 0w30 have actually been the quietest for me so far. Other than that, I think Pablo's probably got the right of it.

My Ranger has the same motor, with the same issue. I about 300 miles I'm due for an oil change, and will be trying Mobil 1 0w30.

I'm sure your problem is engine design. Hondas are noisy, Caddys burn oil,Chevys have piston slap.It's the nature of the beast. Oh, did I forget, Toyotas sludge up and some earlier Fords leak water. Get a horse!
