I have a 2001 xterra. Truck has always used regular mobil 1 10w30 since 5k miles, now has 83,000, never burned oil. Oil changed at 5K intervals. Last change, at 80,000 miles, I used Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30. Now, at 83,000 miles, I had to add half a quart.
I've read that when you switch to ep, sometime the engine will use oil. BUT, I thought since I was already using m1, it wouldnt be an issue.
Any comments? This is the "katrina" blend oil, no starburst, etc.
I went with the ep for the winter, thining I would go over the 5000 OCI, but it seems I'm going to stay under 5000. Should have stayed with reg m1.

" Should have stayed with reg m1. " If you are changing at 5k, the EP wasn't necessary. You could run the Mobil 7500, and be fine. I'd stick with the M1 @ WM- 20.xx for 5 quart jug is a really good deal, considering I saw a price increase this week at K-Mart to 6.49 a quart for Syntec! And they have the old stuff... SG, SH.

I don't know if this helps, but I thought that I would share my experience. I made the switch from Conventional oil -to- Mobil 1 5w30 -to- Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 in 2 of my cars ('00 Honda Odyssey and '97 Toyota Camry). Each had over 50K miles when I started converting oil. No oil loss. All of my oil has been the "pre-Katrina" type. I change the oil every 6 months, which works out to be ~6K miles.

I agree with you that using EP should not be a big change of chemistry. Per the Mobil 1 website, I see that EP has more SuperSyn and more cleaners, but I thought it was basically the same chemistry.

Are you burning or leaking oil?

I haven't noticed any consumption differences with Mobil 1 Extended Performance vs M1, I think you should just keep an eye on it and assume that its a coincidence for now.

Because the local Walmart is getting ready to move to become a SuperWalmart, the oil section is pretty thin. They plan to open on 1/31. Anyway, I had to buy the Mobil 1 5w30 Extended Performance. This went into my 02 Accord V6 with 103K miles. Didn't really think much about it but I guess I'd better watch the dipstick. Car has had a exclusive diet of Mobil 1 5w30 SS since birth.
