What would the best grade be for running 15k + miles in a mild georgia climate? Or better yet, what grade do you guys out there that cross the 15k barrier use? Would the 30 weights be better because of thickening, or the 5-40 because of hddo rating? Just looking to extend my drains. I do 50 country miles round trip each day, and about 30k plus a year. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks guys.

I think either of these two oils would do the job. As long as the engine has no problem, which the first UOA should tell you, it should be just fine. The 10-30 for some engines and the 10w-40 for others that require a thicker oil ie Chev V8 etc.

Sorry,

1.8 liter kia
wifes car and gets 20k plus per year

3.0 nissan is the one with 30k plus because we have 4 dogs that go everywhere with us

I wouldn't go that far without starting at 7,500 and doing some UOA. I'd get a reccomendation from the lab to go farther. If the analysis is good, they will usually up the change interval 1,000 miles at a time.

Another data point which is complicated by your array of models: certain engines tend to run cleaner/dirtier than others.

For example in my case/s: Civic, Toyota Landcruisers, I6's, Z06 V-8, VW TDI's tend to run cleanly, i.e. OCI's of 10,000, 15,000, 20,000, 25,000 (in the TDI).

So if one has any doubts at any point then I would agree, start with 7,500 mile UOA's and adjust the OCI's accordingly.

So I am not being vague:

1. Civic 10,000 miles (till warranty is up in 13k then to 15-20k OCI's) on 0w20/5w20 Mobil One

2. 2 Toyota Landcruisers driven by college aged girls who probably could care less about CARS. AT 15,000 OCI's 5w30 Mobi One

3. Z06 Corvette at 15,000 mile OCI's 5w30 Mobil One

4. VW Jetta TDI 25,000 mile OCI's with Mobil One Truck & Suv aka Delvac One 5w40

That seems reasonable. The oil will probably be fine, but you don't know that the engine doesn't have a problem that will contaminate it prematurely. You can run 7500 then sample the oil without draining it, with the intention of running to 15k if no problems surface.

The M1 EP seems like a good choice.

As mentioned you should do a UOA before going that many miles. I personally can't see running that many miles on an oil change. I used to believe in long intervals. But with the number of coolant leaks you see around, coolant can do some damage in that interval. Thats just an opinion though.

Thanks again guys. I just get tired of getting under my car once a month or so. I do plan on a UOA of each ride to see if there are any problems before I get started with long runs. Pulling a trailer to New York and back this weekend which will put me at around the 5k mark on current fill of castrol GTX 5w-30 and will sample then. Also tired of using so much of a product that is so precious these days. I'm also not against trying something besides Mobil because I have an account with Schaeffers too. Mobil is just easier to put my hands on.

I think one of the utilities of this web site, is at least one can chose their path with or without the data behind. Some folks after reading all there is to read, still want to do 3,5,7.5k, OCI's and in a lot of cases, despite what the oem recommends.

For me, I am clearly out of the "old" school, even though you would be hard pressed to know it, given my posts. In my humble opinion, oil(synthetic especially, as oil has been oil) and the oil additives are way better, given we no longer use leaded fuel. I used to help my father take engines apart as a boy and you probably can guess who was on the sludge cleaning detail...

At that time yes, 3,000 OCI's was pushing it!!

Not to make a long story longer, but one of the TLC's just recently (116,000 miles) was required to take a "smog only" test at the 10 year mark. This smog only test station test is specifically designed to get "old" cars off the road or render them illegal due to non compliance with smog emissions standards. They of course charge you big bucks for this wonderful opportunity. The truck had app 9,000 miles on the OCI and in my opinion, badly needed a tune up.

The truck passed with absolutely flying colors!!!!

As a point of comparison, I took out the first (biannual) smog certification. It was actually below the measurements done 8 years before.

In addition I took it into the dealer for a 120k major tune up at 125,000 miles.

( I should probably mention I do the 30k major tunes with Mobil One 15,000 mile OCIs inbetween) As part of the major tune, they take off the valve cover, etc and every 60k measure the valve clearances and adjust if necessary. It needed no adjustment for the second 60k cycle. They also made it a point to tell me the innards were SPOTLESS with factory tooling marks still visible.

However this has been SOP with a total of 5 TLC's (87,91,94,96,97) with the most noteworthy TLC having 250,000 miles when it was sold.
