Mobil 1 & Excessive Engine Noise

One thing I have noticed since switching to havoline from Mobil 1, is that my temp gauge shows slightly warmer than before.

I put Mobil 1 0w20 in my 2003 4 cylinder Accord at the last oil change about 4 weeks ago.
I’ve notice some noise when it is cold (below 35F) and in fast idle. I did not notice this with the Pennzoil 5w20 I had in before but it never got that cold when I had the 5w20 in.
I don't think it's the oil filter's ADBV because the oil light goes out imminently but the noise continues for a few minutes. Also I do not hear the noise when it is warm outside or once the engine warms up.
To me, my noise seems more like the oil is a little thicker when cold and may not be flowing well, but a 0w20 cannot be thick.
I've noticed this before reading this thread so the noise in not from the power of suggestion.

I don't think its the oil so much as the engine. My boys Honda does in fact sound noisier with any synthetic. He's tried all he can find, they all sound a bit noisier at startup in the cold.quote:

He's just changed to Pennzoil 5w-20 and it is quieter at startup. There seems to be more to this than meets the eye.
My Mazda V6 on the other hand is no different going from Pennzoil to Mobil 1 0W-40. And it definitely runs a little cooler. I do mostly long 65-70 mph trips. 40-50 miles one way.
Waiting to check my mileage figures over several tank fulls. Seems there is a small gain there, perhaps 1-1.5 MPG.
I don't know if Mobil 1 0W-40 can pay for itself but I sure feel better

Terry’s theory is that the oil is simply thinner … but I’m not sure that explains why the extra noise occurs with Mobil 1 10W30 and I think I even saw someone say 15W50 as well.
And we know current formulations of Super-Syn come with a pretty decent barrier additive package. I was expecting the noise complaints to go away with the newer SS formulation but they haven’t abated much, if at all.

Voices in my head are most likely psychological. Other people hearing those same voices can’t be.
Anyway, switching to Red Line the following winter eliminated 80+% of the noise. I had heard of the same results from others who switched to Valvoline Max-Life and Pennzoil High Mileage Vehicle from Mobil 1. Bogatyr is one of those.
The noise seems to afflict mainly engines which have used Mobil 1 for tens of thousands of miles. People switching over to Mobil 1 from various other (often “conventional”) oils, like cangreylegend did, seem to do fine.
As far as I’m concerned, the mystery continues …

its just a thinner oil. So its a little louder, big deal. Id rather have a little more noise than a conventional trying to cover it up with that wax crap in hydrocracking. Yeah there are equivalent oils to mobil 1, but to say a conventional is better than mobil 1 bc its quieter, forget about it. I believe there is an oil for everyone, but for me, ill stick with my pao synthetics(and i run Mobil 1 0w20 with no noticeable noise and amsoil 10w40 in the jetski).
I don't think it's the oil weight. My Audi is definitely quiter on Amsoil 0W30 than with Mobil 1 0W40.
I've had everything from Ford to GM to Toyota, and have never experienced noise from Mobil 1 oil. And it's been in V-8's, V-6's, and 4 cyl's. I also have used conventional Pennzoil, Mobil, Havoline, Valvoline, and others, and never noticed any difference in engine noise after switching over to Mobil 1.
So I don't know what the problem is with you guy's oil/engines, but all I can speak from is my own experences, and that is that Mobil 1 has been a good oil for me. I have recently though, started blending Mobil 1 with conventional to cut down on expense (I have 4 vehicles), also with no problems.
