Terry’s theory is that the oil is simply thinner … but I’m not sure that explains why the extra noise occurs with Mobil 1 10W30 and I think I even saw someone say 15W50 as well.
And we know current formulations of Super-Syn come with a pretty decent barrier additive package. I was expecting the noise complaints to go away with the newer SS formulation but they haven’t abated much, if at all.
As for
cangreylegend’s theory:
“I had always thought it was psychological.”
I don’t buy that even for a second. With Mobil 1, my Dad (who drives a
Fix-
Or-
Repair-
Daily) walked up to my car one cold morning and laughed at me saying my little Honda was gonna throw a rod any minute. Yes, the racket was
that loud. Voices in my head are most likely psychological.
Other people hearing those same voices can’t be.
Anyway, switching to Red Line the following winter eliminated 80+% of the noise. I had heard of the same results from others who switched to Valvoline Max-Life and Pennzoil High Mileage Vehicle
from Mobil 1.
Bogatyr is one of those.
The noise seems to afflict mainly engines which have used Mobil 1 for tens of thousands of miles. People switching over to Mobil 1 from various other (often “conventional”) oils, like
cangreylegend did, seem to do fine.
As far as I’m concerned, the mystery continues …
