Not sure why it matters either. Maybe bmw wants a low virgin oxidation and we know oils with ester have a high virgin oxidation.

Ravenol has a 0W-30 that's PAO-based and carries LL-04:

(technically they have several oils that carry LL-04, but this one is voll)

I think with M1 it is easters that are an issue.
Also, there is this possibility that BMW updated all approvals in 2022 when a lot of 0WXX oils got reapproved. It could be that Mobil1 just did not approve ESP 0W30 in anticipation of a new formulation.

They have the toughest oxidation standards, and probably, it is not fitting within values they see as appropriate for OCI. As for Group III, I think it is due to seals as GrIII does not shrink seals as much.

0W30, that is one with EAsters.
After April 20th the 5W-30 will be more Shear Resistant and have a better NOACK Number than the 0W-30!

I always go for NOACK and not Noack. So, might be in the cart.
Ok, we have 2 oils here:
The Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 has a Noack of 7.9 and a HTHS Number of 3.5
The Amsoil Euro 5W-30 has a Noack of 7.1 and a HTHS Number of 3.6
Which oil are you going to go with? Realize the Amsoil Euro 5W-30 is a tad bit more expensive!
M1 since its in the basement already, M1 because its half the price and available at walmart, M1 because... M1.
Now gear oils.. I'd think about it harder..... maybe.

M1. Although ALE (i think is designation of the one you refer to) was approved etc. price of M1 is too good. Same price, Amsoil.
It is AEL, I do agree if both oils were the same price I would go with Amsoil.
Good call on the ALE Designation, I had to look it up, you got all 3 letters, the only 1 I would have gotten would have been the letter E!
I thought it was Esthers.

I always thought AEL was excellent oil. If Amsoil is preferred product and need Low-SAPS oil, I would go that.
The ESP 5-30 has had the 229.51 for a long time as it was used in their diesels. When I used it in my diesel Benz it started using oil. I went back to the 5-40 and it never used oil again.That is a couple nice options. It's getting harder to find 40 grades on the shelves these days for them to make more room for the API fuel grades & a 0w-40... sign me up! Thanks OP.
Apparently when I look into it the 0w-30 has the Mercedes Benz 229.31 spec while the 5w-30 ESP did not at one point. They mentioned the 0w-30 ESP "Available at most MB Dealers" but not on the 5w-30. Now, looking at the back of the jug in the picture in this post it now shows the 229.31 spec on the 5w-30 so it looks they've come full circle on the 5w-30. Appears to now satisfy that MB spec now. Knowing it will be stocked at WM now they made it meet the spec?

You're right, Upping a grade to combat oil burning is good to at least try to see if it helps.
