Mobil 1 EP doesn't meet Honda specs?

HTO-06 is a fine test and nowadays many oils COULD meet it if they wanted to, they're just not going to waste the money. I can't think of a manufacturer that currently lists it as a requirement.

There will always be "something" that isn't right in a few Honda engines. The VCT Actuator problem found in many cars is one that is found in Honda 4 cylinders. My car does it when it's cold out and it's been sitting for a day or so.

But you'd honestly be hard pressed to find nearly any engine (OPE, V-Twins, 4 or 6 cylinders) that would last longer and are less prone to problems than anything Honda offers. This statement is true for the last 35+ years.

Sounds like, according to that Acura ServiceNews, Mobil 1 was the "only" oil to pass the HTO-06 test. The oil cap says "use only Mobil 1 or Equivalent" , so, if Mobil 1 was the "only" oil to pass the test, what "equivalent" could be used?

I know the different oil brands have been reformulated/tweaked since the HTO-06 test was first introduced, the Pennzoil synthetics and Quaker State synthetic have carried the HTO-06 on their labels for years now.

Reading the bulletin makes me curious, if "only" Mobil 1 passed the test, what "equivalent" oil was there?

M1 5-30 was the first oil to hold the HTO-06 cert. Other oils came along later.

I think by law in the US, the manufacturer has to supply a maintenance item if they specify an exact brand and product...so, if Honda said you had to use M1 5W30, they would be forced to buy your oil.
By saying M1 5W30 or equivalent, even if they didn't have an equivalent to suggest at the time, maybe they got off the hook legally by not insisting on an exact oil. And, of course, they expected other makers to come up with "equivalent" oils in the future, so the wording on the cap made sense with that in mind, too.
