Came across this looking up a MSDS for 0w40. Mobil 1 Biosynthetic 0w20. I've seen oils in their MSDS site before than never saw the light of day (Mobil 1 Turbo Power for example). But this would be interesting.

Could this involve the new forms of isobutene from sugar ?

This is something promising that was mentioned here a year ago or so.

I remember a company in Oakland CA being involved.

So are we talking about Mobil 1 0w20 or Mobil 1 0w40?? Title very misleading. Sorry but I was hoping it be about Mobil 1 0w20
 
PAOs are also hydrogenated oligomers of alpha alkenes, but using C8-C12 (mostly C10) alkenes. The PAO alkenes (also called olefins) are derived from crude oil, while these alkenes are likely derived from vegetable oil. These longer alkenes should give a higher VI and possibly better lubricity, unless they have numerous branching from the hydroisomerization. Should be oxidatively stable.
 
Government contract oil. A lot of bids for the military / national guard, post office, municipalities, state bids, etc. etc. Have either mandates to use biodegradable and/or renewable products. Or they have set asides to make them much more favorable for the bids.

Almost all the majors have some sort of renewable / biodegradable line. P66 has firebird, which the last I checked was just SK eco power rebranded. Chevron has one. Shell has theirs hidden away under the Panolin line up of products.

Please note that "Biosynthetic" only means what the manf. infers.

People might be led to think this oil would be composed of say 80% or more of bio-derived (Group V) component(s) because it is designated as 'Bio,' but notice that it also contains Group II and Group III base oil components as well.

Why would it contain lessor base oil Groups? Because they are needed to impart certain characteristics to the final formulation that the bio-synthetic component cannot provide alone.

My Point? People need to realize that ALL oils these days are actually "BLENDs" of various base oil types of various viscosities--as I have stated numerous times.

I think component 4 is an ester-based anti-oxidant.

I think component 5 is obviously a Molybdenum DithioCarbamate FM or MoDTC.
