Mobil 1 5w20 Oil Consumption.

My Friends 2012 Hyundai Sonata with the 2.4 GDI motor has been running on 5w20 Quaker State Ultimate Durability since new. Oil would be changed every 3-4k miles never used any oil. Or at least not any that you could measure off the dipstick.

Since the Quaker State Ultimate Durability showed so badly in my ex wifes Elantra and my friend heard of this, my friend asked to try a different oil in its place. I recommended Mobil 1 5w20 Grey Cap.

After 3600 miles of the Mobil 1 being in the crank, the oil on the dipstick is between full and Low so I am guessing its close to a quart low. [censored]??

Only thing I can think of is the GDI Motor fuel diluted the Mobil 1 so bad that it sheared enough to blow by the rings or what? Bizarre.

My friend wants to either put the Quaker State Ultimate Durability back in next oil change or try the Castrol 5w20 Gold Bottle.

Just curious to why the car burned through a qt of Mobil 1? Any thoughts?

Usually when the dipstick is close to the middle of the 2 marks, you are .5 quart low, or close to it. However, not all manufacturers do that. If you read the owner's manual, the section written about the dipstick will tell you how much oil to add when you reach the minimum mark.

I suggest you add .5 QT of oil and then check the level again.

As for why it burned one oil and not the other, I am not sure. How many miles are on this car? PCV valves can fail around 50,000 miles, and raise oil consumption.

Half way between ADD and FULL is a 1/2 quart low.

even if its a 1/2 a qt I mean what is going on. Car has 36K on it. Never used oil before, till now. Bizarre. or a heck of a coincidence.

M1 does strange things to people's cars - everything from noise and consumption to high iron readings in the used oil analysis. Most of the noise complaints are limited to the thinner grades though. But then you'll have your hardcore M1 fans come on here an deny everything and say M1 is the perfect oil and they can't understand why everyone's not using it.

I am leaning towards the Castrol Edge 5w20 Gold Bottle to try in this application.

Not using M1 in this car again. Bizarre indeed. If its not the oil, like I said its a huge coincidence.

If you want a sure bet at eliminating the noise and consumption, go 10w30 conventional.

Why do we want to fix what was working fine with the original oil. Just because a friend didn't like it or got a questionable UOA that is no reason to change to a different brand. In addition; it is not unual to have increased consumption when one changes oil brands for the first oil change or two. Ed

Oh Merkava, you would have walking into our garage. 5w20 and 0w40 used in pretty much everything you would recommend 20w50.

Jeff, I'm betting it's the change of chemistry. I have never noticed a difference in my truck and in a big block mopar between m1 or any other brand and consumption in the 5w20 flavor. But no reason not to switch back since the Quaker State Ultimate Durability was working great.

When the dipstick is at the low mark it is a quart low. Not when it is in between marks. Are you sure it was actually topped off at the oil change? If it was a cup low then and now it's a pint low, that's only a cup of usage which isn't bad for changing oil brands. From what I read of course. My car once in a while will burn 1/2 quart in an oci then might go 2 or 3 without burning any.

Halfway between the marks would logically mean a pint low, but I would check with a drain and fill. I have doubts about how accurate dipsticks are.

If the M1 was fuel diluted in this application and driving use, any other oil would have been as well.
Episodic oil consumption happens without rhyme or reason.
Our old '97 Accord, which saw mostly Pennzoil Platinum over the 140K we used it would sometimes need a quart after 4K and sometimes would go 6K with no adds needed.
I recall adding a quart to a fill of Pennzoil Platinum 10w30 on one OCI after 4K and needing no adds on a subsequent 6K run of Pennzoil Platinum 5w30.
No good explanation for it that I can come up with.
I wouldn't condemn M1 based upon a one-time apparent increase in oil consumption.

Same car same engine.. i hv used tgmo, royal purple,Quaker State Ultimate Durability,ultra(All 5w20) and Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w20.

My car like the ultra the best and Quaker State Ultimate Durability second, it just revs freely and smoothly with ultra. Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy was by far the noisiest and no I didnt notice any consumption with any of the oils .

There is another thread running now where someone switched from Mobil 1 to TGMO and had consumption. It's a pretty common occurrence.

If it were my car and the owners manual allowed it I'd run 5w30 (especially in California in a GDI engine.)

Car manual allows 5w30 across the same temperature range as 5w20. it recommends 5w20 for better fuel economy.

This is why when going to syn, I stuck with 5w30...esp. since many I4 engines "use" oil...it now "uses" a quart between 6 and 7k depending on the type of driving...
