I am wondering if it is safe to run M1's 5w-40 oil in my gasoline engine in my chevy silverado. Due to high mileage and a slight drop in oil pressure I like the idea of a thicker oil because M1's 5w-30(what my truck requires) seems to be very thin for a 5w-30. Any advice is appreciated, and if anyone recommends a different weight than what I have stated for my situation, please fill me in! Thank you

A 5W-40 or 5W-50 should be fine, does your engine have a oil cooler? if not i'd definetly go with a 40 or even 50 in any car.

But he's not driving Euro-alloy. Here we can run lighter stuff. We're not stuffy and have no delusions of refinement (j/k).

Sure. Use it.

Yes, it is a 2003 silverado with the 5.3 in it. I am located in Southern south dakota, so it gets pretty cold here, it can get to around -15 to -20 degrees F at night on a clear night in january.

I actually looked into M1's 0w-40, since they say it flows better at cold start up(?) and it has the weight of a 40 wt at operating temp. But its very hard to find around here, and its expensive.

So if I remember correctly, M1 has two types of 5w-40. One is for Turbo Deisel and the other is an ESP formula..In your opinion, Which is better for my truck? Or will they both do the same thing? Thanks for the replies guys

You will have no problems with 5w40, good stuff from what i read here.

My problem is that it costs the same for 4qts as the rest that come in 5qt jugs.

How many miles? And are you getting your pressure readings from the factory gauge or an aftermarket? How low has it dropped?

mcrn - My truck has 215,000 miles on it. My factory gauge reads 35psi at idle when its warmed up, and cruising at 60mph down the highway it is at about 42psi. It used to be alot stronger than that. I also have an aftermarket AutoMeter gauge in it, and it is reading pretty accurate to the factory gauge.

tig1 - I have always been told that M1 5w-30 is thinner than others, by my peers and by a few local mechanics that have done work on my truck. They say that the M1 straight 5w-30 sheers down to a 5w-20/25 after time. I have no facts to back this up though, as I said, its just hearsay.

So back to my question, can I use the M1 Turbo Deisel 5w-40 in my gas 5.3L engine or not?

Yes. The TD 5-40 should be a very good choice for your engine. I use the 5-30EP and last years UOAs showed no shearing at all at 10,000 mile OCI.Just a thought.

Ok, maybe I will give the 5w-30EP a try. Ultimately I was just looking for an oil that will give my oil pressure a boost. I race a circle-dirt track racecar and I have always been told that the more oil pressure the better(I like to see atleast 80psi) Now I realize in an everyday pickup you don't want tremendous amounts of pressure, but a little more is always better IMO. And it helps me sleep at night.

Thanks for the replies
