I was thinking of putting M1 synthetic 5w30 in the Generator we have.

It's a TroyBilt 5550 with a briggs/stratton 10hp motor. It has regular SAE 30 for air cooled engines now as a factory fill. I am going to change it after about a 5 hour run time.

Any advice ?

I was going to put the 5w30 in it since I have about 80 quarts of M1 here stocked up (Gotta love the Pep boys buy 3 get 3 free -- A case for $16)

Is the vehicle oil safe to run in the generator?

I ran GC in my Honda EU2000i during the hurricanes last year. After 3 days, 75 hours I changed it. Currently the GC has about 100 hours on it and I am going to change it, next time I use it.

My new 7500XL Generac still has the factory fill Briggs oil in it. Not sure what I am going to run in it, probably an HDEO. I have Mobil 1 T&S, Rotella T Syn, and Castrol Tection in stock.

HD i put mobil 1 0w30 in my generator. I was using 30 hd and 15/40hdeo. These oils perform well in my robin 7.5 hp engine. Mobil 1 seems to make that engine run much smoother and start easier, im talking about 1 pull starts. Briggs recommends 5/30 weight synthetic year round if you are running their syn or any other syn. If you run dino then they advise 30 wt. I run my generator maybe 20 hours a year unless "something happens".

Is that a splash-lubed engine or does it have a pump?

Most of those generators run at 3600RPM to get 60hz power... which is high... and should keep the pressure up even with "thin" 5w30. If it's splash, with slinger, then it should be slinging like crazy. Syn 5w30 has dino 30 beat, at least, though as others say you could do better, like 10w30 or even 5w40 T&SUV. Plus you'll probably warm the thing up a couple seconds and load 'er down when cold so the thinner startup works for you.

I'd be less concerned about having 80 quarts of M1 and more concerned about maybe ~10 gallons of stabilized gas down there in hurricane alley. Also spare spark plugs, air filters, etc....

I use M1 5W-40 in my 10K 14HP Briggs generator (with pump and filter). This little dude runs hot in the summer when loaded so the 40 gives good protection, and the 5W gives good cold weather starting. Indiana has great temperature swings so the 5W-40 covers all ranges allowing a once per year oil change. Longest run was 100 hours after an ice storm. No oil usage and color was good. Philip.

I used Mobil 1 5/30 in my Generac 6500 Workhorse with an upgraded 410cc motor - I test run 40 min every 6 weeks with 4800 watt load - change oil every year and filter every 2 (after original 2 short changes during break in) - did not burn oil or contaminate with moisture.

My last change was to Esso XD-3 0w30 because I have cases of the stuff - Mobil 1 worked well in my application - tops of valves looked unused at 50hrs run time (head bolt torque check).

I run Mobil 1 5w30 in my genset. Been running it that way for years and years. Once a year oil changes whether it has run or not and a new battery every two years. The genset is natural gas powered and selfstarting. We travel quite a bit and frankly I have no idea how many hours it has run. In 15 years or so it has never been down a drop of oil and has never failed to start.
