The sump size is ~6.5 quarts -- big, but not that big. And our 2UZ was very happy with its M1 filter. Additionally, for you Schmoe, sleep well, this engine is one of the very easiest on its oil. Under anything remotely close to "normal" conditions, a 12k OCI is not going to be a problem at all.

Are you sure the Sequoia has the same capacity as the Land Cruiser? I saw on another forum that it is 7.2 quarts.

my bad

I am surprised this UOA did not get more attention, this UOA is wonderful

Oooops, my turn for a red face so here it is:

This was, of course, a 'cruiser UOA, not a Sequoia. I don't know the LC's sump capacity, it could well be 7.2; that would seem reasonable. It's the Sequoia that we have, and when installed in a Tree, the 2UZ takes the ~6.5 qts to fill. It never occurred to me that Toyota might be bolting different sized pans onto the same engine. . .

Bwahaha... I wanted to post a question to my original thread and I see it got resurrected once already and I didn't even know it!

Anyhow, here's the question:
Would I see improved characteristics if I moved to M1 5W-30EP or M1 0W-40EP?

I have run M1 0W40 in my Camry and I drive it like I just stole it. My UOA looked really good. The TBN retension was great. I have run M1 0W40 in my Mothers 2002 Tundra but have not done a UOA on it yet. I can tell you it seems to run just fine no matter what my family buts in it. Dad likes to run M1 15W50 in the warm months and M1 10W30 dureing the cold months. Last winter he did try M1 0W40 in her Tundra. Tomorrow I am going to be putting M1 10W30 just plain jane M1 not EP version. That is what Dad bought so that is what is going in! I think he picked up a Fram oil filter for it as well. These engines are so well built that in many cases they do fine on what ever you put in them. RP and Schaffers 9000 are the only two oils that I can recall of hand that have turned in less then stellar UOA in these engines.

I doubt it. But it wouldn't hurt to try. You really need at least two back-to-back UOAs, better yet three, to do any meaningful comparisons at the levels we see in your UOA above.

my tundra was a touch over 13k with M1 5w-20, and came back with very good readings, using a M1 oil filter as well. time in sump was just over a year, oil was in very good shape. have gone back to the 0w-40 now, will have another one in about a year. have a 20k OCI on a cayenne-S and a 10k on a miata to post next month, both with 0w-40.

These engines are great. Sold my 99 LC and got a 2004 LX470. Since its under the 3 year 100K mile CPO Lexus warranty, Plus I love the Lexus service experience. They do a 5K mile service using a semi sythetic oil which is more then OK with this engine.

The last few M1 EP UOA's show better TBN retention although I don't see much of a difference between EP and regular M1??

I would not worry about the insolubles if he is going to keep this interval. If he was going to extend it out any I would change the filter and he would only be adding maybe 1/2 a quart tops since the filter used onthe 4.7 is only slightly larger then the one my Camry use's on the I4.

This is just a a classic example of why I say that M1 is as good as ever and work's great in Toyota's!!! You almost never see a bad UOA in a Toyota with M1! When you look at how widely available it is and how cheap it can behad int he 5 quart jug's at Walmart it is hard to beat if rebate's and BOGO sales are ignored......

If anyting I would recomend he try M1 0W40 but he would probably have to go to AtoZone for it and it would cost a bit more!!! The M1 0W40 will have better TBN retension and will produce even lower wear number. The insolubles would be about the same so no big gain there!Fuel ecconomy should also improve with the M1 0W40!
