12,200 miles on the oil
1999 Lexus LX470, 2UZFE 4.7L V8, 112,200mi on vehicle
Driving is primarily highway, with above average time off-road in severely muddy situations. A M1 oil filter was used with no changeout for the duration of the 12,200 mi interval. No additional oil was needed to replenish the vehicle.

From Blackstone:

TAD: No problems showed up in the initial sample from your Lexus. Almost all wear read right at (or below) averages for this type of engine, which is a good indication of normal wearing parts. The universal averages show normal wear after 4000 miles on the oil. Insolubles (oil oxidation due to heat, use and blow-by) were normal at 0.5%, showing good oil filtration. No fuel dilution or anti-freeze was found. The TBN read 2.7, so the oil still contained some (not a lot) active additive. You could run this oil a little longer, if you wanted. Try 13,500 miles next sample.

OH What a feeling a UOA report like this.M1 5/30 yet not 10/30. Impressive for sure.

Absolutely. This may be the longest OCI on this board for Mobil 1 without a bypass filter. I would though highly, highly recommend a filter change midway thru. Even if you went with the SuperTech (WalMart) filter which is a very good (made by Champion)

Why? Do you think a filter change would improve this UOA result?

Looks like he has a wining combination here. Changing the filter and adding a quart of oil would just be a waste of money. Believe the data.

Thanks for all of the feedback guys. I thought it was a pretty good UOA but it sounds like I underestimated it a little bit. I will probably go for another UOA with a similar interval just to see what the repeatability is. I will not push the interval out to 13,500 even though blackstone said it would likely be alright. I'll consider it a safety margin and be happy with 12k mile intervals. If the next UOA fluctuates significantly I'll go to a 6,000 mile filter change, if the results are repeatable I may decide to stick with 12,000 mile filter spans as well and just watch the oil level for consumption.

Lab comments!

This makes absolutely no sense to me! Did they look at the results?

Look at the insolubles. Cost of SuperTech filter - 2 bucks. Cost of makeu oil-2 bucks. Not a lot of money and he might be able to extend if done at say 7K miles or so.

Spector... please clarify the reason for your apparent outrage.

This has to be one of the best built engines on the market. I do 3750 mile oci with Castrol GTX 5w30 on my Toyota 4.7 V8 and will go to Mobil 1 when my warranty is up. I will then go to a 6K mile OCI, which sounds like its going to be very conservative.

TAD, how many months did you go on this OCI. Also have you done another UOA since this one. Reason I ask is that I have a 1999 LC with 58K miles and just started using Mobil 1 5w30. Plan on going a year and around 8K miles OCI. Do you think once a year OCI with Mobil 1 a problem?

I had absolutely no indications of trouble going 13 months on the last fill of GC on my wife's Sequoia (same engine, of course). Our earlier M1 UOAs were not for as long, but showed plenty of life left. For a healthy 2UZ, used within normal parameters, I see no reason at all why one year is not easily within range (especially if you use the EP formula). I don't think you'd even be close to used up at that point.

What a great report I only hope my 4Runner will have a report as good as this. M1 and the 4.7 seem to be a great match.

tabraha2,

Great report!

I have some questions:

1) How long was this oil run for?

2) What size is the oil sump?

3) You posted that this oil sample was taken in

SAMPLE DATE 08/26/04,

is that a typo?

Thanks,

Bill

12,200 OCI??? Wow. Great "balls" of fire, I mean that literally because I wouldn't be able to sleep with that long of an interval. This does prove it is certainly possible with the right combination of things, but over 12K? Whoa Nelly.......

2) What size is the oil sump?

This is what I want to know. These trucks have gargantuan coolant capacities, I have a feeling the oil sump it large too.

Regarding the filter changeout? I think it is crazy for anyone to suggest that the engine would be happier with two supertech filters than with one Mobil 1 filter.
