Mobil 1 20w-50 V-Twin

I finally got around to sending in the sample of Mobil 1 20w-50 V-Twin. Here are the results.

"Nothing too unusual showed up in this virgin Mobil oil sample. Note the slight presence of sodium, which will also be in your oil samples, should you choose to use this oil in your engines. The viscosity is just a little higher than our standard range for 20w/50 oil, but it's still okay. The TBN read 10.8."

I don't know. How does Mobil differentiate the new "SS" version from the old?

It appears to be a different formulation than was reported in the undated Full Throtle West article (link posted under Interesting Articles section). These numbers were reported there:

Can this oil be used in a car? Interesting additive package....lots of zinc, boron and some moly! It's a shame viscosity is so darn high!

I paid a little less than $8/qt, which I believe is about the going rate at retail stores. Might be a bit less thru internet sellers.

The only place that I was able to find it around where I live was at a chopper shop in Livermore, CA.

MSRP $8.00 per quart +/- a few cents.

The V-Twin formulation Paulo had tested looks more like the Mobil 1 15w-50 red cap oil than the V-Twin formulation Full Throtle tested.

Okay, I just got home and checked the container.

It reads, "SuperSyn" on the label and has a black cap.

I also paid $9/qt. and not the $8/qt. I originally stated. My memory is shot......

What the heck makes this oil so much more expensive than M1?? I can't believe the extra additives cost that much more.

I've seen it in some, but not all, Auto Zones for $8 and change. Still think that's overpriced even with the new formulation. I do like that it's a heavy 50 wt though.

I think the M1R will come back down to earth soon. The most I would pay for oil might be something like $6.50-7....something like red line or amsoil.....even then, it is very hard to justify the price when you have M1 for less than $4 at the local Sam's or Cotsco.

I feel, more than anything it's targeting a certain market segment that has lots of disposable income. Now I don't have anything against Harley-Davidson, but it seems to me that they can put the HD brand on hog pies, price them at a premium and they'll sell so fast that there'd be a buyer waiting list.

I'm running this oil in a v-twin from Bologna, not Milwaukee. Hopefully I'll have enough time this summer to put some miles on this oil and be able to have a used oil analysis done.
