I noticed that Walmart has M1 10w-40 now. I don't recall reading anything about it here on BOTOG. I might consider using it rather than Rotella T Syn in my truck if the comments are good.

M1 10W40?? Really?

I hope no one buys it so I can grab it all on clearance like I did the 0W40 and red cap 15W50.

Oh yeah, I'm excited 'bout this oil.

Yes that's definitely on the shelves, but as the web link above shows - it's an HM oil (along with their 10w30 HM). They definitley market towards a particular target audience (cars with unmaintained engines). They probably shouldn't do this, because they're kind've saying it's not for a lot of people.

Very interesting - note that the M1 10w30 HM is A3/B3 certified - that's serious stuff - basically European Long Drain certified. In an HM oil!

I'm pretty sure A3/B3 has nothing to do with "Long Drain." A3/B3 means the HT/HS viscosity is 3.5 or better. Any Xw40 will meet it but Mobil is one of the few bottlers that list European specs on the label in the US.

Yes, but he was referring to the 10W30 in that post. Few 30 weights have ACEA A3 certification. Maxlife Synth, GC, and not many more.

LOL. I remember when 10W-40 was the norm and you moved down to 10W-30 when winter arrived. I guess nobody understood back then that didn't make a whole lotta difference.

Yes, it claims 100% Syn., but same old question on what ratio (if any) of group III & IV.

What turns me off just a bit is their marketing statements of "designed for the car that hasn't been maintained well - eg, long OCIs w/ mineral oil, etc" (not exact quote). So with this I'm thinking it's seriously loaded with detergents and other additives possibly to the pt of sacrificing lubricants.

Plse elaborate. Is this based on the Visc. index?

Note, most other HMs only target the >75k crowd. They don't market to the "your engine is possibly gummed-up crowd" like M1 is doing here. But perhaps the gummed-up group is a big one. But it gives me second thoughts - I've got 134k on mine, but it's clean. So Mobil is sort've telling me straight up it's not for me. Feel left out.

10W-40 and 10W-30 are supposedly the same thickness when cold. If they wanted to make a sensible change for winter temperatures, dropping to 5W-30 would have actually made a difference. The 30 and 40 represent viscosity at operating temps.
