Vehicle: 2002 Subaru Outback with 115,000 miles. Unknown service history prior to 100,000 miles, can see a bit of sludge through oil cap.

Engine: H6 3.0 liter cylinder engine has an aluminum crankcase, double-overhead camshafts (DOHC) chain-driven with four valves per cylinder. The timing chain does not have a replacement schedule. Has Direct Ignition with an individual ignition coil for each cylinder so there is no distributor or sparkplug wires. Premium fuel, 91+ octane, is recommended. 212 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm; 210 lb.-ft. of peak torque @ 4,400 rpm. Vehicle has 6 quart sump.

Usage: typically rural/city usage Monday-Friday 6-10 miles daily to/from work and errands. Frequent highway usage on weekends to go camping or visit friends/family.

Will be paired with Wix 57712 oil filter.

Factory OCI states 7500 miles normal/3750 miles severe service. Thinking of an 8,000-10,000 OCI depending on how much highway usage I see.

Go for it, just keep it topped off. If the oil usage is excessive, just switch to MaxLife Blend and a shorter OCI - or try Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w40.

Over the past 15,000 miles of my ownership oil usage has been under half a quart per 5,000 miles. Hopefully that stays consistent.

OP, what are you hoping to gain by using thicker-than-spec oil?

Being in "the South" would likely mean a 5w40 or 10w40 really won't perform any different than 0w40. But 5w30 or whatever is on the spec will also work just fine, perhaps lube as well as 0W40 on start-up, not decrease engine life, and probably not change your oil consumption too much. I generally only worry about it if it's > 1L or qt per OCI.

Oil consumption on those engines is generally valve seals, yes?

+1 !!

Not hoping to gain anything really. Maybe quiet down timing chain a little bit, but I just found Mobil 1 0w40 at a good price and thought I'd give it a try. Just replaced PCV which was not closing up well, hoping that will help consumption a bit. Valve cover gaskets and oil cooler gasket have both been replaced recently due to weeping.

My brother just started running rotella t4 15w40 in his '03 forester. Those boxer motors really love thick oil. If you pull your owners manual online you can run anything SL or better in as thick as 20w-50. The rotella is SM rated and has high detergency to deal with that sludge.

... and I suppose the timing chain would be happier with a xW40, no ?
