I have a friend that wants to try running Mobil 1 0w40 in his 2010 Toyota Tacoma with the 4.0 V6 just for the summer. The owners manual recommends 5w30 is it a bad idea to run a 0w40?

Yeah, what is he trying to accomplish? Is there a problem he's trying to solve?
If he just has it on hand and is trying to use it up, sure, go ahead. But I wouldn't go out of my way to buy Mobil 1 0w-40 to use it in this application.

Yes I guess I should clarify his father had a BMW and Mobil 1 0w40 was all he used then he sold the car and gave several 5 quart jugs to his son so he thought he would use it up.
Could he run this in the winter as well or is it to heavy?

I've used 15w40 and SAE40 in just about every Toyota engine, from Yaris to Matrix to 22Rs.
Mobil 1 0w40 is not a heavy engine oil by any means.
But just for fun, check out the South African Toyota factory site and see what is stenciled on the oil filler caps.

He can surely run it during winter, too. It's a multi-viscosity oil suitable for year-round use.

Not only fine but downright robust. Since it's on the lighter side of a 40W it should work very well for him...

Agreed. If my old BMW can start at -27 Fahrenheit using it then anything can.

Sometimes people have specific reasons for running a given oil. He may be looking for higher grade for elevated oil temps when towing.
We run Mobil 1 0W40 in a GT500 at the strip and on the street because we feel it's a good match for 160-230F oil temps. But for a track event with higher oil temps we run Mobil 1 15W-50.

You guys with thin oil cars need to stay with thin oil. The 0W-40 is for the BMW and Mercedes boys.
If it were not for government regulations and manufacturers wanting to appear compliant, 0w-40 might be the universal fit for most applications as the oil specified to replace 5w30 and a list of other oils for slightly different temperature ranges. Today's engines work harder for their living than ever before. Xx-20 oil might have been much less popular. Other than certain high performance applications a good quality synthetic 0w-40 would cover a lot of situations and make the choice of oil viscosity a much more simple task. The spec's could state, if in doubt use 0w-40.
