Two bad assumptions. Amsoil products are not "thick for their (SAE) viscosity (range)", and do not "always thicken in use". Current SSO 0w30 is 10.3 cSt. SAE 30 range is 9.3 - 12.5 cSt. Don't remember Mobil 1 0W-40, but I think it's 14.0 cSt@100°C.

Amsoil TSO, ASL used to experience an increase in viscosity, especially the TSO, but that was at least two years back. The last few formulas have been pretty stable.
