I have a 05 G35, I have been using Mobil 1 5w30 but it turns a dark color very fast, not sure if that means it's working or that the engine doesn't like it? I read that the VQ35's like a slightly thicker oil, would the Mobil 1 0w-40 be a good choice? GC 0w30 is not an option, no stores around here have it.

I put it in our G35 Coupe last weekend for the first time. Am trying to reduce oil consumption with it and this oil has really good TBN retention. Too early to report anything yet. It certainly is not a bad idea to use this oil.

Well I don't have oil consumption issues but wouldn't mind trying a new oil to see how the engine likes it. Is Mobil 1 5w-40 thinner than most 40 weight synthetic oils? I am hesitant to use a 40 weight oil in a DOHC engine since the lash adjusters (valvetrain) are designed for 30 weight oils.

I may be wrong, but typically M1 0w-40 has been a relatively light 40wt oil - and it has a shearing profile that brings it down solidly into the 30wt regime, before it oxidatively thickens going back up to a solid 40wt. All is well in engines designed to have this oil in them... and it should be a fine oil all the same.

Its not like running a HDEO in there...

if you can get a hold of some VSOT and there is a BMW dealer around, the BMW 5W30 with 1oz of VSOT per quart will bring it to a 35wt oil. TBN on the BMW oil is 10.3. make sure to use a high efficiency filter, like Amsoil or M1.

the analysis of the almost black oil in my VQ35 after 3200 miles showed a good reading... guess the engine just makes oil black!

After 60K miles on my G35 with different brands of oil (5K OCI's) and either OEM or Pure One oil filters, the oil turns dark very quickly after every change. Conversely, my Toyota and Honda engines barely change the color of the oil during an entire OCI.

I don't own a VQ35, and I'm not familiar with it's engine requirements, but I've run M1 0W-40 in two different SAAB 9-5 wagons for the last 5 1/2 years, with no issues, and no consumption in either car.....and by NO, I mean NONE. Oil doesn't move on dipstick during 5K OCI. The oil does turn dark pretty quickly, disconcertingly so for me, since this was the first synthetic I'd ever used. My reading indicates that this is normal, and may be considered a byproduct of the oil doing its job.

I should perhaps note that this is also the recommended oil for the SAAB 2.3T engine.

Redline Oil is easy to find in the bay area at retail outlets and it's as thermally stable as anything I've seen, with flash points in the 470F-490F range depending on SAE grade.

I'd try the Redline 5w30 or 10w30 under the same conditions you are running Mobil 1. I think you'll find it hold up to high heat much better....

If you can find them, try German Castrol 0W-30. (it is almost a 40W oil in terms of viscosity). I have been running GC in my 350Z for past 3 years @ 7,500miles OCI.(oil can probably last even longer) No consumption issues.

I run GC and Redline....and Redline has been the best oil for dealing with heat and 'spirited' driving.

I just put GC in my G35 today and can't even read the dipstick yet after 15 miles of driving. This is very unusual! I have to admit that the G35 dipstick is the worst design I've ever seen though!
