Can someone please explain what the difference in cold start viscosity or which would flow better at temps from around freezing and below. Mobil FS 0 40 and Mobil 5 30

Anything with a 0W should technically flow better on startup in all conditions, how much difference between a 5W and 0W at those temps is debatable. Both those oils have good pour points and you can't go wrong with either for year round use.

Not true at all...although if you've got something to convince me otherwise, please do deliver it...

Yep, I'm with you mate.

I was just looking at some Oz Castrol Edge products, and their viscosity at 40 C and 100 C

Edge 0W40
KV40 = 79 cSt
KV 100 = 13.1 cSt

Edge 5W30 A3/B4
KV40 = 72 cSt
KV 100 = 12.0 cSt

Edge 10W30 A5/B5
KV40 = 66.2 cSt
KV 100 = 10.5 cSt

Given my recent Australian summer with temperatures of +40 C, and looking at the figures above, the Edge 10W30 would flow better at start-up for me than either the 5W30 or the 0W40.

Sure at -40C the order would be completely reversed, as it would be reversed with a hot engine at 100C.

Wont make any difference where you are. If ur car specs 5w30 you can use 0w30 if you want..still wont make any difference.

Yeah, you might get a cold snap Merk.

Lucky for me I'm running SynPower 0W40 in an Australian summer. It dropped down to 35 C (95F) this week and I need all the cold flow I can get in this cold snap.

-35C, probably the 0W40
-40C, definitely the 0W40.

I just ran a google calc to convert C to F, and interestingly -40C = -40 F. Or is there something wrong with that calc?

I'm looking for a oil that flowes good at those temps, I have a older pick up with 300k that has lower oil pressure when cold but it's great when it's warm. What x 30 or x 40 Mobil product or Castrol would flow better at those temps, 32 f to 0 f. I did use celcious earlier.

1.8*C + 32 = F
If we want C=F,
1.8*C + 32 = C
0.8*C = -32
C = -32/0.8 = -40 = F

Crobinson16, Mobil1 5w30 flows better between 32f and 0f, although it starts getting very similar below about 20f to 0f. (Then colder than about -5f, the 0w40 is thinner.)

That 5w and that 0w you see is a very very cold rating.
I tried that once. It was Zero Degrees F outside one morning, I left M1 5w30 and M1 0w40 on the porch overnight, and the M1 5w30 was a bit thinner.
Then, I tried the same thing on a 25F morning, and 5w30 was very noticeably thinner.

300k, that engine is done buddy. Don't run a "high efficiency" oil filter. M1 5w30 and Castrol Edge both have excellent cold flow. I'm not sold on the Ti additive I think it causes problems.

Eneos sustina has the highest Vi and lowest KV 40 I've seen lately. Good luck finding it and its Bigus Bukus - alsoI would never put it in a old pickup, juts bc and old wornout pickup should not benefit from this oil in any meaningful way.

You better drop the oil pan and clean the pickup screen - low cold pressure looks like a gunked up oil pump pickup problem that oil choice is not gonna fix!

+1 Low pressure on start-up is usually indicative of a blockage.
