I was having issues with my Tech 5hp engine on a mower. It was having a hard time side discharging heavier grass and a real hard time mulching. It would bog down and die pretty easy in heavier grass. I recently added MMO to the oil, ran it for about 5hrs total and noticed that it was running better. I changed oil to T6 after draining the MMO and it mulches like new. No issues with bogging down. Before I did the MMO/T6, I decarbonized the head, lapped/adjusted the valves thinking that would help, which did not. I have a little OCD when it comes to mower maintenance, so this mower has never been neglected. Suprised with the difference in performance after MMO and T6. Double dose of MMO in the gas for all of my OPE's.

Glad you ar now able to mow heavy grass. But your scenario is far from scientific proof that MMO works. T6 is excellent oil.
From a cutting grass perspective, I believe one should not cut more than 1/3 of the length of the grass. So (example) if you have 6" grass you can cut it to 4". But cutting 8" grass down to 3" is not good for the grass.

If I understand correctly what the OP wrote the MMO is no longer in the sump, so the "thinner oil" is no longer present. I'd be willing to bet it cleaned up the rings a bit and boosted compression. Too bad the OP didn't do before and after compression readings. At this point all we have is speculation, and the typical snake oil comments soon to follow. LOL

Hey MMO is PFM. Pure Freakin Magic. MMO is aspirin for old engines. MMO is the perfect snake oil. It has been duping American motor heads for 90 yrs. Bottom line,it is cheap and it smells good. Used as directed, it causes no harm. No guarantees, it is not engine engine rebuild in a can. That is the bottom line.What it appears to do starts there and goes upward. For my old mowers, it seems to make them start easier, and store better.It is the only additive I use with regularity
The T6 is a darn good oil to use in OPE and there's an awful lot of info on here to back it up. 40W is no big deal in air cooled engines, but it is the thickest I would personally go. Add to that, that most of the T6 data I've seen rank it as a low 40W, and you're looking at perfection for air cooled engines.
I have found on my old Tecumseh powered snowblower that when I ran synthetic 0w30 or 5w30 that it had went through deeper snow better. Maybe its because it cleaned up the old engine, maybe its because it flows better in extreme temps...no idea why, but it seems to toss the snow a bit further since I switched from the dino Castrol I was running in it.
A couple of thoughts come to mind. First, there could have been sticking valves or carboned up piston rings. The very thin oil in MMO might help unstick and clean up deposits a bit.
Second, on many small engines, the governor is located inside the sump, and actuated by oil. Viscosity will play a role in governor performance. If it's sticky, or lazy, clean oil may help. Viscosity changes can change the RPM setting of the governor some.

In all fairness mowing makes it easier on the condition of the grass. Dry grass will cut much easier...early morning dew makes grass cutting harder on the engine. If you got heavy tall grass depending on the power of the engine it can only cut so much. Higher height grass I would had raised the heights of the mowing cut...less strain on the engine. After that lower the cutting heights.

T6 also has a robust add pak, so the MMO will hardly weaken the anti wear additives. Even with some MMO, you still would probably have a stronger add pak than some many SN oils. Id do it for your Briggs Tech 5hp engine.
On a side note, thick oils could be a death sentence to a Tecumseh if over revved due to the plunger style lube system. The side walls of the oil pump (white part) will blow out.
