Getting a reliable second opinion is key.
You may be trying to "correct" a problem that doesn't exist, except in the dealer's planting a seed of doubt in your mind.
Some Camry engines you can't see the top of the cylinder head since there is a baffle just under the filler cap.
If the dealer hasn't scoped it or pulled the valve cover, he's trying to get your money. I'm not saying he is, but it's amazing how many engines are "sludged" and need the dealer's super special (and high cost) additive treatment so they don't explode, seize, etc.
An honest shop is your best bet.
Synthetic is fine to use, but be more certain of the "diagnosis" before heading in a certain direction.
