For many of us in coastal areas, catching rockfish is an enjoyable pastime, and they're mighty yummy as well. Last Saturday was gray and chilly, so I went out on a local party boat, figuring it wouldn't be too crowded. It wasn't.

First stop, the bait barge. These miserable pests beautiful California Sea Lions like to hang out looking for an easy meal.

We headed out of the Mission Bay Channel, with the San Diego River and Dog Beach on the left, and South Mission Bay Park on the right.

And sure enough, there's the Pacific Ocean. Although it looks pretty pacific, we were pitching through about 10 feet or so in front of the channel mouth and for a little while thereafter.

And the fish:

The striped one is, I think, a red-banded rockfish, and the other "big" one I'm pretty sure is a vermilion rockfish. It's considered pretty impolite to gut your own fish on the boat, but I didn't want the deckhands fileting them either, since a lot goes to waste, so I just had them gut the fish. In any case, they were delicious.
