Hi guys,

I think I know the answer to this one, but its something Ive never done before.

Ive got a couple of quarts of 5w20 syntec from my wifes Mazda left over after her oil change. I wanted to put synthetic in for the winter on my high mileage civic. 5w20 has been backspecced, but its a bit thin, considering the car has 160K miles on it.

I picked up two quarts of 5w40 in an attempt at hitting close to a 5w30 between the two.........will this be okay?

It was a cheap synthetic oil change doing it this way. Oil and filter was a little over $20, and I can use up the rest of the Syntec we had left over. I'll be running it for 6K and 6 months.

Thanks

No problem at all. I mixed 5W40 and 5W20 a while back to get rid of some orphan qts I had in my stash. I've mixed conventional and synthetic, as well as 2 different grades and brands to cull the stash.

Ryan, about a year ago I asked Castrol essentially the same thing via their webpage. I wanted to know if I could mix differing viscostities of Syntec with Edge. I was advised all of their motor oil products are entirely compatible with one another; no exceptions (probably because people do this all the time). The Widman viscosity calculator will enable you to determine what you are going to end up with. http://widman.biz/English/Calculators/VI.html --

My E430 sump is currently have 6 qts Mobil 1 0W20 and 2.5 qts Mobil 1 15W50 plus 8 oz VSOT, the spec oil is Mobil 1 0W40 but my engine is most quiet with thinner oil.

I tend to mix the same brand if possible, the next brew will be Synpower 5W20 and 5-10W30. After that will be either Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 or Mobil 1 5W20.

Thanks fellas,

I should have known the answer. Its always nice to have reassurance.

thanks for the link!
