Mixing gear oil?

Hey guys ive been lurking the forums for some time, but i acctually came accross a question i couldnt find the answer to.

I swapped out the rear dif covers (front/rear) on my 2012 ram 2500 with Mag-hytec covers and goofed when i bought my gear oil online. I bought all Amsoil Severed gear 75w90. After doing the install i realized i didnt order enough. Long story short I am in a time crunch and need the vehicle up and running today. I cannot buy amsoil locally so is it safe to mix another synthetic gear oil that is also 75w90? Mobil 1 is the best option my local auto part store sells. They carried the Lucas line but it was almost $20 a quart so mobil 1 is half the cost.

You can use Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil with confidence. If I were in your situation, I would use straight Mobil 1 in the front diff, and use the severe gear in the rear. But that are completely compatible, no issues there.

In my experience with 4x4s, the front diff fluid gets polluted with oxidation from lack of heat/extended use, and should be replaced on a time basis rather than mileage.

I have to believe you are not the first to mix gear oil, and I personally have never had any of my mechanics ever telling me that it was a big issue.

Unfortunately the front diff. Is already filled and i have 5 quarts of the Amsoil already in the rear diff when i realized i didnt account for the new diff covers added capacity. So the rear diff would be 5 quarts of the amsoil severe gear and about 3 quarts of the mobil 1? Still feel confident that should work?

If you don't absolutely need to have your truck on the road today,I'd just wait and order more Amsoil. Maybe (and that's a huge maybe) you can Google Amsoil dealers/reps in your area and find someone near you who sells it and go grab what you need from them.

Unfortunetly it has to be back up and running today and no local amsoil dealer around me has any in stock. I spent yeaterday trying to track down any i could find.

Beside the fact that its best to use the same fluid which is the obvious answer, will this work without problems? Is it safe to mix these?

I'm in a similar situation. I have a some of MolaKule's most excellent gear oil and some Schaeffer synblend gear oil left over. Not enough for either one to fill my front diff on my F-150. But between the two I have enough to do it. I asked MolaKule if it was alright to mix these two and he said his will mix with other gear oils no problem.

I wouldn't mix the gear oils. If you have to,use your Amsoil in one of the diffs and go buy some top quality otc gear oil for the other diff.
