Mixing differnt brands of 0w20?

True. used oil analysis are often cited here as proof of things that cannot be determined by used oil analysis.


It does not matter what is presented though. There will never be enough "proof" for some.
used oil analysis is the best available to most, plus the fact that the engine is still running after tens if not hundreds of thousands of miles.

If proof is needed, then show me proof that mixing is bad (and then I can say that it is not proof regardless of what it is).
 
I've presented time after time that in VERY RARE cases, it can be absolutely disastrous (via SAE papers)...that refutes "never"...but the fact that nothing (usually) blows up is taken as "never" by the believers.
 
I don't live in papers, I live in the real world of automobile engines, not marine diesel engines with 100 gallon + sumps.

Papers and theory shows time and time again what should or should not happen, yet real world application and experience show different from what is supposed to or not supposed to happen.

Sure there are caveats to mixing. You do not know what you will get weight wise when mixing (especially things like brand a 0w-20 and brand b 15w40), the oil will only be as stout as the weakest oil in the mix, and some vehicles do require specific ratings that mixing will not meet.
For most of the motoring public, mixing is fine.

You can just add me to the list of rubbish advice on the forum.

How many logical fallacies can you pack into a post ?

Remember, the papers (including Toyota fleet engines, and tractors) were generated because "real world" problems occasionally show themselves..in the "real world" and investigators investigate to stop them happening to others.

That's not correct. You have no idea really what the resulting mixture will be in terms of "stoutness", whatever that is exactly.

What UOA parameters should one look at then that will illustrate the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of mixing brands? It won't be TBN since that is a more simple acid/base buffering. It won't be viscosity since that is something you can calculate ahead of time. It won't be the "W" performance since that isn't measured. So what in the UOA is the proof that shows it is the "bast available to most" test?

Understand I am not completely disagreeing that nothing (really) bad will happen. But if the UOA is used to show it is OK what in the UOA does one look at?
 
Must be quite fortuitous to find a used oil analysis of the exact mix of "free" oil in your own application to verify that it's all great before doing it.

Or do you spend $25 AFTER using your free oil mix to prove that the half arsed guess and risk was right ?

UOA mostly worthless in gaging engine wear.

LOW NVH and appropriate fuelmilage would be the TOP two indicators, followed by capability to RELIABLY and REPEATABLY produce torque at high RPM without a dissonant resonation.

The days of engine whisperers are numbered - except for maybe, motorsports.
