Mixing Brands

Ok here it my problem. After all the oil rebates I took advantage of only one of my vehicles takes 5 quarts and I will be left with a few quarts of Pennzoil Platinumm, Mobil 1, Valvoline Syn, and Castrol Edge. What will happen if I use the all of the leftover oil in one oil change. This will be quite a while from now because of all the cheap oil I took advantage of. All oil is 5w20 except the Edge which is 5w30.

If you don't need to change oil very soon, you can still buy one or more of these oils when it's on sale before the next oil change.

it is possible,but not necessarily true,that there might be a lessening of beneficial effects due to inbalance of chemistries.i've never tried what your asking.(with so many) i'm sure others will come along and chime in.

some actually mix a different oil for a specific effect but usually just one extra oil.(like increasing viscosity or ZDDP)

I thought it would be ok, but I just wanted to ask for some opinions. It would kind of defeat the sale price if I had to buy makeup oil at full price by the quart. I never heard of anyone's engine self destructing because of mixed oils.

You'll be fine mixing different brand, but quality synthetic oil. I'm sure it is a lot better than the conventional used in some Quick Lube places.

What make, model and year vehicle will this be used in?

You can also take a trip to Walmart or any other Auto Parts store and get credit for the unused bottles. With the credit you can buy the oil that you wish to use.

That is absolutly fine. All of the mentioned oil are of similar vintage. Many people hear mix oils... dino, syn, brand/brand. As long as it is the same weight I would do it in a heart beat. I wouldn't mix weights unless its for a specific purpose. But, maybe 1 qt of 5/20 mixed in with 4 qts of 5w30 probably wouldn't make ant difference. I'd go with the manufacturer interval.

Auctung! The only exception might be the fussy German cars that ask for and get EP.

On my daughters Honda I mixed 2 qts of walmart synthetic 5/30, 2 qts of Napa Synthetic 5w30 and 1 qt of MotrCraft synBlend 5w30 and a fram filter I won as a door prize, I bet it won't know the difference. I'll change the oil in 6,000 miles as per spec.

The Three Vehicles are a 2006 Toyota Sienna (5 quarts), 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 (Hemi engine 7 quarts), 2008 Mercury Sable (6 quarts). All state 5w20 in the manual except the Toyota which has been changed by a TSB to 5w20 and seems to like it.

Thanks for the tip. I think I'll get me some. The filter is worth $7 so you are getting the oil for $3. that's a no brainer.

Is it a problem to mix oils with a different group bases, such as Redline 5w30 and Mobil 5w30 to increase the additive levels?

All the different oils are more alike than different. Look up the used oil analysis ans VOAs.

Wouldn't that just average them out? Or is that what you are going for

I was thinking more of raising the additive level above using Mobil 1 5w30 only, while also adding some GroupV to the mix.
