Mixing Brake Fluid & Chlorine

It's dangerous, not because of the fire and explosion, but because it releases Phosgene, a poisonous gas that will cause bad injuries to your lungs, nose, eyes and so on. Much like burning or heating brake cleaner spray. Don't do that either, unless you like to try WW1 war gas.
It also releases some HCL, don't touch that either

I believe they were to provide the participants with psychological comfort and reassurance.

Yup me too.

Another one to try is aluminum foil balls in the bottom of a bottle, and pouring The Works toilet bowl cleaner in, capping it and running.

Reminds me of playing with Calcium carbide in 3rd grade. A bucket of that was 2-3 hrs worth of explosive fun. Then the home made Bunsen burners...

Not even dust masks. Those are some type of surgical masks, designed to keep the doctor and nurse from coughing on a surgical site. And no, they're not good for chemical vapours.

My friends and I made rockets when were kids (won't list the ingredients of our rocket fuel). We had a few fiery explosions (burned holes through my friends bed right through to the floor one day) but all in all we had a great time. My engineering professor's son lost a hand and an eye doing the same thing using the same ingredients. Doing unsafe things is great fun until something goes drastically wrong, which it will from time to time. You may be punished rarely, though possibly severely.

Just make sure to hold on to the bottle while running. Wouldn't want to drop it.

Because chlorine is a very, very powerful & concentrated oxidizer, which greatly accelerates reactions; particularly exothermic ones!
