I think it was jalopnik where I read about someone getting a W12 Phaeton cheap, but then had to pull the engine for valve train issues...

Yep the only good V12's in the VW group are in the Lambo's, the W12 is an engineering abortion.

Essentially commuter beaters that they drove until rust or whatever took them out.

All did well and were low cost to acquire and operate. No frills, but a commuter car like that allows one to allocate money elsewhere which has paid off handily in the long run.

Likely more millionaires drive junky econoboxes than Phaetons.


The "frugal" millionaires I know never drive junky econoboxes or moreover new ones. They seems too chose ford trucks and average sedans like accord/Camry or drive older sienna if they have kids. Locally they tend to drive Subaru in droves too.

My uncle drives a 15-year-old base-model Ranger or a vintage F250. When the Ranger has to go, he has said he'll probably get a cheap small car...I wouldn't be surprised to see him in a 5-speed Mirage.
