Finally a happy ending:

Sub Crew Rescue

Great. Superpowers seem to be reluctant to ask for international help. I'm glad they handled it correctly this time.

For deep mining accidents, you need to call the Germans, but I have seen the help offered and refused with negative consequence.

I can't see being nationalistic when various expert specialties are available and peoples lives are at stake.

This sounds like an accident that never should have happened.

Thank God. I would hope that the U.S. would call for help for our guys if they had to.

Like I said Groucho, it has been refused in the past. I'm not trying for a thread lock, but we have refused specialized help offers in mining accidents in the past.

That's beside the point, let's just celebrate these guys being ok and the wisdom to use the best tool to get the job done.

Hats of to the Royal Navy and a temporary embarassement to Russia isn't worth the lives that would have been lost.

Yep! You gotta love it when a plan comes together. I hope that it was well documented so they can share the rescue with the rest of us.

I was elated when I heard the news yesterday afternoon.

Fingers crossed for the 7 astronauts this evening also.

It's a good thing the sub guys got rescued before the Shuttle came back, It's hard to cross all those fingers at once.

Sad to say, it's time to put those babies in a museum.

We better all say a prayer for the astronauts. I was working in the program in 86 and that day has yet to move into my past. The phrase, 'coming home on a wing and a prayer', seems to fit.

The Shuttle will be replaced by two different platforms; an SRM based one to carry people and a Heavy Launch Vehicle (liquid core w/ solid strap-ons), to carry up to 100 tons of cargo,ie Saturn 5 class.

Both these systems will have the payload at the top of the tanks and propulsion system, to minimize damage from ice and other solid debris.
They will also include a much more advanced launch abort system then has been imployed in the past.

The Shuttle is a marvelous machine, but it was designed in the 1970's....
