A reminder to all Veterans and their families and descendants…

Make sure you fill out the paperwork confirming Veteran status before you die.
It can take 9-18 months before the Veterans Administration gets back to you,
and in rare cases, 3-5 years, or longer…

If your loved one is deceased, you could be waiting for burial/ interment until the paperwork clears.

Make copies of ALL your papers, DD-214, awards, discharge letter, and take pictures of ribbons, rank tabs, and uniforms as well, to submit…

I took my Dad over 10 years ago, it took 11 months for them to confirm his Veteran status, and rank.

I knew he was an LT, O-3, because I had his hat rank, and I knew from his ribbons that his destroyer had cut through the combat zone of Korea, to get the crew combat pay for the month…

My Sister finally found his discharge letter confirming O-3, and his DD-214 confirmed his Korean War status…

Good advice, which I did several years ago. Another thing, is that when my original DD-14 was issued, it did not include several of my awards. You can file for correction and get your DD-215 with updated info. Easy to do. Also you can get your pre-approval for your burial plans from the Government for you and your wife if you choose to go that route. You can do all you need to do online. I did all this for my Dad also, who passed in 2017. Made things much easier.
