I may be helping my daughter change the oil and filter on her 2004 Mini Cooper this weekend. Any suggestions on what oil filter to use and where to get it? Mann seems to be the one that keeps coming up in my research. It is the cartridge type. Also if anyone knows, what is needed to remove the cartridge housing. It looks like a $40.00 36 mm 3/8" drive socket is needed. Is there enough room for a 15" adjustable wrench? I'm not looking to expand my tool collection at this time unless I really need to.

Check the plumbing section. Chances are you don't need a high quality socket. Likely it tightens up on an O-ring needing about the same torque as a spin on. Hopefully the factory doesn't use the same apes as they do with some of the spin ons. Maybe some of the adjustable oil filter wrenches would work.
I have been looking for something cheap to handle Sloan valve caps that are about that size. Most places don't have open stock over 1 1/4''. Fortunately my dad's old 1 1/4'' socket works fine on the cartridge cap on my Ecotec.

I did find a 36mm 1/2" drive socket at Sears. The biggest in 3/8" drive was 32mm. It's a little big but it will do the job.
I also ordered a filter for it at NAPA that should be in tomarrow. I'll continue to look for a good source for Mann filters.

Thanks, I found all that on a Google search. Also found a warning about not throwing away the filter core support with the old filter. I was hoping to find someone that has actually changed one. I did not find any 36 mm sockets at the Craftsman on line store except as part of an entire 3/4" socket set. I'll keep looking. Any other ideas out there?
You could consider the OEM filter. It is not as expensive as you might think. I believe it retails for under $8 and can be bought for less in quantity if you find the right online retailer. I can get it for less than $4 since I work for them, but that's not helping you now, is it?
Do you know of any online sources for this filter? All the ones I found were priced at about what I paid for the NAPA filter. The online sources would have added shipping. If the price is right, the shipping can be absorbed by ordering a reasonable quantity.
Sorry I didn't see this sooner. A lot of info and how-to's on many of the MINI sites. One item that is sometimes missed.......MINI has 2 filter set-ups. Almost random which you will get. Some have the internal assembly for the filter and some don't!
If you do not have the internal parts, make sure that your filter HAS the plastic internal cage for support, or it will collapse. I have pictures to prove it. Mine is an "S" with no center tube.
(Aftermarket Purolator L15465 can only be used if you DO have a center tube since it has no internal support of its own, no plastic inner cage .)
My dealer only stocks one filter for both and the pricing is very competitive . Take a look here
