If it were anyone else I would have bought anothe reliable Japanese car...

Is it possible that some cars aren't bought for reliability reasons? Maybe it's a second car for her and it doesn't matter if it needs to be out of service once in a while. All those other times it probably puts a big smile on her face - something that a Corolla or Civic will never do.

I was surprised that I could fit in one comfortably. I'm 6'5". I checked it out when the Mini was first released. Seems like a cool car, but at the time they were price gouging since it was a new model.

Well the first tank ran for 453 miles and required 13.1 gallons to refill the nearly empty tank. That equates to 34.5 mpg in mixed driving with the AC on 100% of the time. Not bad but I expect it to improve a little as the engine breaks in.

That's pretty good! It should improve a bit after a few oil changes and when it is broken in. When I first got my 3, it was getting 17-18mpg!

Now I can get close to 30mpg regularly.

My Mazdaspeed 3 averages 22-27 mpg, depending on how hard I flog it- but I'm lucky to see 11 mpg on the track. My ti is the fuel economy champ; at 80 mph(4,000 rpm) it returns 31 mpg, while on the track it manages 16-17 mpg.
Having said all that, I'd still love to have a JCW.

Congrats to you(r) wife! 34.5mpg is great for the first tank. It'll get closer to 40mpg after break-in.

I just got a used one - '06 MCS 'vert. Average gas mileage is 26-27 with mixed driving.

The wifey has now put over 5400 miles on the Coop without so much as a hickup and she likes it more than ever.

But being the anal oil guy that I am, I noticed a tag on the dipstick that said "MINI recommends Castrol oil" so I went to the Castrol website and entered my vehicle info to see what grade they would recommend. Much to my surprise, the website replied that Castrol did not have an oil for my application.

W.T.F.

It really doesn't matter to me right now because I am using "genuine mini" oil while under warranty but I guess the marketing guys need to call the engine guys to get their stories straight.

I'm sure they have an appropriate Castrol oil in Europe. They just forgot to bring it to the US.

The "genuine mini" oil is most likely Castrol since all other BMW-branded oils available at the dealer are Castrol-sourced as well.

Yeah... the interior is a subjective love it/hate it kinda thing but I have come to like it as it fits with the overall quirkiness (is that a word?) of the car.

I have really been impressed by this little MINI so far. The engine, while not the turbo "s" version revs freely without a hint of harshness and everything the driver touches seems to do what it should do effortlessly. I am also impressed that my 5'-17"

250 lb. frame fits in it so well that I actually adjust the seat one notch up from the back position which is a rarity for me even in much larger vehicles.

I thought the Mini S came with a supercharger? My wifes friend has one and you can hear that sucker whine at idle...pretty cool.

The S was supercharged for the first few years but they switched to a turbo a couple of years ago. I think it was 2007 but I will surely be corrected if I am wrong.

Some TRUTH from your keyboard, sort-of.

The first gen new mini (got it?) used a 1.4L and 1.6 (IIRC) version of Chrysler's 4 cylinder engine that was part of the Neon's family of 4 cylinder engines. (Yes, the Tritec from Chrysler and Rover, both 1.4 and 1.6L engines.)

However, when Chrysler became Daimler Chrysler, the folks at BMW were having a cow over buying engines from their arch rival and came up with their own engine for use in the 2007 model Mk 2 BWM Mini's. (Well they worked with Peugeot to create a new 1.4L and 1.6L engine.)

Are you sure about this? Chrysler became Daimler Chrysler around 1999... and I think that pre-dates the modern incarnation of the Mini.

I have no idea why I love the interior. My brother hates the car to [censored] and back. He told me he would never talk to me again if I bought a MINI. Probably motivation enough to buy one ASAP.

That is the one thing I dont like about this car. They expect you to get all of your service done through the stealership so they dont put simple helpful things like oil spec in the owners manual. In fact I cant remember if it even has a specifications page at all.

Find yourself a good mini forum where you can pull info from. By now I am sure you have found that Castrol Syntec 5w30 is what they put in at the dealer. And as for 15000 mile intervals, I am with you. I do my own in between at 7500 miles. Although we are at 45000 miles now so I only have one more complementary oil change before the dealer service plan is up.

After 2.5 years and 31000 miles I am happy to report that our Mini has been nearly flawless. There have been no mechanical issues but we only got 28000 miles out of the OE Bridgestone tires.

The car is now shod with a new set of Michelin Primacys and I certainly expect a longer life from them than I got from the Bridgestones.
