That's the draw back with chemical fertilizer since the lawn adapts itself to feeding chemical fertilizers. What happens is the soil biological society which feeds AND PROTECTS the lawn is gone. Reason the lawn will no longer feed these fungi that aids the plant and in feeding and protecting against the bad stuff in the soil. Just like man has colds, flu and diseases. The feeding process with the plant's intake with chemical fertilizers will alter itself and no longer feed the natural structure that feeds the plants since the plant nutrient becomes directly from chemical fertilizers. NATURE IS GONE.

Chemical fertilizers will give instant results BUT also not all of it is used. They stay in the soil or get washed out because the natural soil biology no longer is the same. Staying in the soil is not good also which will leach out microbes that can not survive in a toxic state.

Organic on the other hand is nature's balance society. Like plumbers, carpenters, doctors and garbage collectors all in one they do their thing keeping things in order. When you use chemical fertilizers that society no longer is needed since the host plants will get it's nutrient directly from chemical fertilization. Eventually over fertilized soil becomes leach and waste land(worst case scenario).

Chemical fertilizer is fast and easy on lawns, but for me I'm all organic one big society with lawn, plants, vegetables and fruit trees.

And what organic products do you put on your lawn?

In south Florida, you generally have about 4" of black soil and several feet of white sand and fossilized coral and limestone.
I add coffee grounds to add organic matter , but it's a real bugger to really get a good base for plants.

I use a humus base fertilizer called Gro Power. When I start a new lawn, the soil itself has no life in it. I till in compost and water it heavy for two weeks to soften the soil.

I apply Endoroots(Mycorrhizae) for inoculation. It's a poultry base application. There after Gro Power 3 times a year.

I really like that humus base. It's a professional product something you don't find at Walmart or Home Depot.

That stuff is widely available and is highly regarded. I've been using dehydrated poultry waste lawn fertilizer made in Colorado and it works great.

The single best thing that helps my lawn is core aerating. I had gotten away from it for a few years since the bozos that do it can't seem to miss sprinkler heads, even when they're marked. But I had it done this spring with a double aeration with organic fertilizer and even with a lack of rain, I'm having to mow every 5 days or so.

I used to rent a gas powered commerical unit but they are a serious PITA to use. In my arid climate where sandy/clay soils are common, it's such a routine thing to do in the Spring that I just find the cheapest guy on Craigslist and have them do it with a commercial unit. They almost go door to door around here in the Spring and everyone gets it done. In other climates it may not be such a common practice.

If you have a smaller lawn, you can purchase hand core aerators like this:
