Do you change oil by the miles driven or the time the oil has been in the vehicle?

Example: 7,500 miles or 7.5 months

Doesn't the OEM recommendation also indicate which ever comes first?

So if you are following the OEM recommendation, it would be at 7500 miles if that happened before 7.5 months, or 7.5 months if that happened before 7500 miles.

I believe the OEM specifies both as well as a severe and normal service schedule to address both high use and infrequently used vehicles.

Yes that is correct

So the answer would be, "it depends."

For me, both my wife and I drive about 2K/month, so our cars go by mileage. The kids, they drive far less, so they end up with oil changes every six months.

I use fuel burnt. I think miles fails to take driving conditions into account, whereas total fuel at least counts idling, and gives SOME (probably not enough) greater weight to stop-and-go driving than cruising at 55.

Miles certainly takes more pertinent factors into account than time. I'd only use a time-based interval if I knew mileage wouldn't be enough to necessitate an oil change. (E.G. My girlfriend's mother drives only a few thousand miles a year so I'd change her oil annually).

As far as my car - the last OCI was 200 gallons (turned out to be 8,320 miles), hoping the UOA comes back clean with some TBN left so I can extend to 250 or maybe 300 eventually.

Depends on use...I drive my cars enough I hit my mileage before time generally. So I mostly use mileage. Now some people I go with a time, 6 months generally because they just drive a lot of small trips. Now my grandma I go a year, because she doesn't drive much, but when she does, it's to the city 20 miles away. Then she goes shopping and all over town. So I know her oil gets plenty hot to burn off anything. Also her car is in a garage that's fairly temperature controlled so I don't worry about condensation as much. Depends on all the conditions the car sees.
