Mighty oil filter made in Malasia!

Customer brought in a Jeep today. While I was pokin around under the hood I noticed that the oil filter said "Made in Malasia" right on it and it was a "Mighty" filter.

I've seen Mighty filters before and assumed they were Champion filters.

While that filter may be fine I'm scared of it. I would not put one on my stuff.

My opinion anyway.

You would be surprise about the quality of manufacturing in Malaysia. All the Japanese brand electronics (like Sony and Panasonic) are now made in Malay, so are many harddrive, PCB, and stuff like that.

To be honest, I have very low confidence on the stuff built in US, not because of the people (I have a few friends in the manufacturing industry that are very professional and do good works), but because of the MANAGEMENT AND BEAN COUNTERS.

PandaBear makes a good point. Some of the most shoddy furniture I've seen is mass market Made in the USA stuff. The drive to hammer costs out of domestic products no matter what often leads to poor workmanship.

Recently Radio Flyer closed it's last US mfg. plant and is moving their red wagon production to China. The last US made Radio Flyer wagon I put together had sharp edges, poor screw hole alignment and lots of other signs of we-made-it-cheap. I bet that their Chinese production will probably be better than the US stuff.

I would much rather have a Denso Thailand filter than a Fram USA filter.

Sad to say, but high quality low cost mfg. is something which the US has largely given up on.

About Sony and Panasonic products:
Not all are made in Malaysia and other SE Asian countries. In fact, most of the electronics I buy are made in Japan. I don't see the point in buying a Japanese product if it's not made there. (including cars) I know the work ethic there because I've lived there. It's more than engineering that makes their products superior. Studies show foreign cars (Japanese and German) made in their homeland are better products compared to those made in other nations. (e.g. a Honda Civic made in Japan vs. one made here).
On the other hand, I like to buy "Made in USA" if I can. I am talking about products other than cars and electronics. American manufacturing jobs are being lost because of capital flight to the 3rd world. I don't mind paying a little more for my fellow people. (I don't shop at Wal-mart anymore if you can see the connection here).
