iw as doing research on oil filters. fram says their extra guard is rated at 10 microns,96 i think pass efficiency. yet the tough guard is rated at 20 microns at 99% multi pass. woouldnt the tough guard havea 10 micron, and the extra guard a 20 or 30 micron? how about the other filters like purolater pure 1, Ac delco?

The industry rate filtration as a beta ratio. To get real numbers, you need to contact the relevant manufacturer, quote the part # and get their beta ratios for that filter.
There is a thread here with some excellent links on what beta ratios relate to. http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=6;t=001797

Contrary to popular opinion, not all filters from a manufacturer filter the same. They choose from a variety of media. For example, Baldwin have over sixty different medias that they use.

purolator beats fram in filtering from what i can remember on the box, as does SuperTech from walmart (the little graph on the side of the box)

just go out and buy a whole bunch and try them yourself through a bunch of different oil changes.

Micron ratings are virtually useless as described on some piece of packaging.

All filters are 1 micron, or 5, or 10, or 20...
It depends on the efficiency at the stated rating.

Single pass is one type of rating.

Multi pass is another.

As can be beta ratios..

Without publishing the lab test information any marketing department can show their filter brand to exceed other brands. It's the simplist thing in the world to do.
