I just bought 2 oil changes at o'reillys, 5 qts Chevron and a microguard (wix) filter for 13.99 For my new car I upgraded to a Wix for $4 more, but kept the microguard for my winter car. Other than the silicone anti-drain back valve I can see no difference between the 2 filters. Anyone know if the media is different or did I pay $4 for adbv? These new microguards seem like the bargain of 2014.

microgard is the cheapest filter known to mankind.

compare them to jobber filters that cost about 2$

What? MircoGard oil filters are now made by Wix. It's very comparable to Napa Silver oil filter and Carquest red. It's a good solid filter that is better than a no name "jobber filter". Run it with no worries.

I think not. They are both Wix filters. I was asking if anyone know what the difference is.

The new Microgard's by Wix will be very similar to a Napa Pro Select or Silver.

Your actual name brand Wix filter has a silicone ADBV, and better, higher efficiency filtering media. It also uses a different bypass set up in many (but not all) applications.

Did you get more filter by upgrading? Yes you did. Will it make any real difference? Probably not, but it wasn't money poorly spent either IMO you simply opted to purchase a higher quality product from the same company.

That's what I'm thinking. It's a Wix with a regular adbv instead of the silicone. I have one and it's identical to the Wix,even says "Made in Mexico" on it just like the Wix.

The Havoline/Chevron deal at OReillys is killer.

In the past, Microguard filters were made by Purolator and, in a few part numbers, by Champion Labs (AC Delco, STP, etc). They were probably "jobber" class filters with fewer pleats but still servicable for 5000 mile changes.

The new Microguards at OReilly's are indeed made by Wix.

I bought 10 quarts of 5W-20 Havoline and two filters today. The store was short one filter to fit my Toyota and they were quick to substitute a Wix filter with the same number.

Compared side by side, these cartridge type filters are almost identical.

The elements on both the Wix and MG were paper towel brown with an identical number of pleats. The only difference was the color of the plastic core holding the elements together.

Both filters were made in Poland.

KCJeep has it pretty well covered here. Besides the silicone adbv, you got a more efficient rated filter than the MG, so yes the media is different. As he also noted, the only other difference 'could be' the type of thread end bypass design. If you see the same metal coil spring design at the thread end return opening of the MG, then there's no difference as compared to a Wix. If not then that application likely uses a nitrile combo valve. As for whether it's worth the difference, imo for a ~5k or less oci, probably not so much. Beyond that, the Wix becomes more cost effective.

To be clear though, other than the Napa Gold (same as Wix) any non branded/labeled Wix filter, is a Wix 'made for', to specs of the supplier/seller, not Wix. That is for the cellulose/blend type media filters.

And for a recap of the O'R MG filter manufacturers since 09, Purolator, Fram, briefly Champ (some ecore), and now Wix.
