I was at the local O’Reilly’s a few days and I perused the oil filter section. I noticed something different about the basic Microgard blacks. This was on a MG51394, a PH4967 and Toyota N1/F1 sized filter. The lettering on the dome was different, but it still said Leak Tested with a serial number but the base plate was yellow chromium plated vs. the naked metal finish of the gray Selects. Made in India on the label. It felt like a good filter. Anyone using these?

There is plenty of modern manufacture method oil filters from India. I have used a handful of Purolator Tech and NAPA ProFormer oil filters that were made in India that I cut open and they were fine quality wise.

Is it me, or does it seem that too many folks think US made products are perfect, and anything made elsewhere is garbage ? These same folks would be amazed at how many parts in their vehicles are sourced from China; yet, they think nothing of buying hard goods at the Chinese Outlet Store ( a/k/a Walmart )

For an industry that can be so automated in manufacture, the major USA based oil filter makers have no excuse to not build a similar quality product for their entry level filters. Even the European branded and made oil filters with similar labor costs can make and import filters that beat most of what is made here at a decent price point.

Wait? The malaise era domestically produced cars weren’t perfect? Surely they were better than the Germans.

I seem to recall a few Microguard cut open videos and they looked pretty good.

The days of good oil change deals at AAP/Autozone/Oreilly's/Pep boys are long gone though unfortunately, that was the only time I bought a few.
