I just recently purchased a 2002 Ford Range Edge 4x4 with the 4.0L SOHC engine. Vehicle has 44000 miles on it. The transmission calls for Mercron V and the power steering and transfer case call for Mercron. I would like to replace fluid as I do not know the maintenance history of vehicle. My question is: Can I use Mercron V in place of the Mercron and if I just swap fluid in the power steering resevoir, will the Mercron V and Mercron mix.

That is correct. The newest Mercon V is also rated as appropriate wherever Mercon was specified. Ford no longer licenses Mercon and has stated that Mercon V is the correct fluid to use where Mercon had been specified.

Ford changed their mind, big time.
It was a mortal sin to interchange the two types, but now it is perfectly acceptable [Mercon and Mercon V].
It probably always was OK.

I think what they've indicated is that Mercon V is great to use where Mercon is indicated, but Mercon is NOT OK to substitute for Mercon V.

When Mercon V was introduced, (this is based on what I have read) there were seal compatibility issues in transmissions that required Mercon. It took a few years to fix that, and that is why Ford would not condone the use of "dual rated" fluids. They were basically saying that their fluids weren't up to par with the aftermarket fluids. Once it got fixed, Ford then back spec'd it.
