For my Ranger, the transfer case calls for Mercon ATF according to the manual but I have a few bottles of Mercon V laying around from the transmission pan drop I did a few months ago. I would like to just use the left over Mercon V and I was wondering if that would be okay.

My understanding is that Mercon V is an updated version of Mercon that can can be used in place of Mercon. However, Mercon cannot be used in place of Mercon V. Is this true?

That is how I understand it yes...

I think the biggest thing with Mercon V and Mercon is just that Mercon 5 is a blend. There might be an additive change but somehow I doubt it.

So yes, mercon V in mercon application is ok. The other way around isn't recommended.

I would use a good synthetic ATF in the transfer case of the Merc V

fwiw when Ford officially dropped the Mercon spec, they added Transfer Case Fluid for all applications calling for Mercon instead of updating them to Mercon V.

Mercon V was said to be no good for Mercon applications [from Ford].
But Ford changed their minds, and now MerconV is very good for Mercon applications.
It always was OK, in other words.
