Need to change the tranny fluid in my 2002 2500 HD with the 4L80E. GM says use Dex III. I found a good deal on Valvoline Full Synthetic Mercon V that states for use in transmissions calling for Dexron-III/Mercon fluids. What do you guys think run the Valvoline Merc V or wait till I can get some Dex VI.

I would vote for MerconV -- many steps ahead of DexIII.

Stay away from these super thin DexVI ATF for old vehicles!!! Even though it is speced to be backward compatible for GM vehicles, I would not risk with DexVI.

Use the Mercon V, I have it in all my GM and BMW that call for Dex III.

You may find the Dex VI very thin, it is designed for 2006 and up GM products

Will you please explain the risks?
