Memory upgrade cause these problems?

I have a 5 year old HP ZV6000 Pavilion laptop that just had 512mb of memory so I bought to sticks of Corsair 1gb ram to update this system to speed it up a little.

The computer booted up with no errors and it recognizes the ram.
The web works fine and so do all the programs except a few.

Firefox won't open as well as Help and Support, System Restore and System Information. All others I have checked will respond. System Restore from the main menu will open a window but it's blank.

Running XP Home, build 2600 SP 2 with a 40 gig HD and now 2 gigs of ram.

Any ideas where to start? Computer works great otherwise!

Remove one stick and run this:

http://memtest.org/

Then swap sticks and run it again.

I removed the stick under the keyboard and reinstalled the original stick of ram and it made no difference.

The HD "works" when any of those programs are selected but then nothing. I updated Firefox so it works now.

My next step I guess is to reinstall the original ram back into the rear slot where I still have a 1 gig stick installed.

Meanwhile, everything else associated with Windows...works.

This sounds like an unrelated problem to me.

Log in as an administrative user

Uninstall firefox from the Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs

Go to Start->Run and type "cmd"

type "sfc /scannow" at the prompt and press enter.
You may be prompted to put your windows installation CD in the drive, so have that handy. This will take about 10 minutes.

Once the scan completes, type "chkdsk /r"
It will ask if you want to run a scan next time the computer boots. Select yes.

Go to Start->Shutdown and select 'restart'

When your computer reboots, it will start scanning itself. The scan will take a while, but it's hard to say how long exactly. Maybe 15 minutes. Once it finishes, your computer will restart again and allow you to use it.

Reinstall Firefox and see if the other stuff works, too.

I reinstalled the memory that was originally in the computer and still had the same problems.

I also notice that on Outlook Express, the normal window that loads when messages are received is blank as well although you can click the inbox folder and see the messages.

I think maybe there is a registry problem as I ran Registry Scrub after removing a couple programs.

Got it worked out! I typed these three commands in the "Run" box and all is well now:

regsvr32 Jscript click [OK]
regsvr32 itss click [OK]
regsvr32 shell32.dll click [OK]

I found this after some searching on Google.

Replace your HD drive with a branded (Seagate/Western Digital) modern 7200RPM hard drive and your machine will knock your socks off.
