i have rubbing compound and HD speed i use with my PC DA polisher and foam pads. i have a few scratches that won't come out with HD Speed. HD speed polishes it well but they are still there .

i want to try using my rubbing compoud but and concerned it might be too aggresive . i want to go to the local WM and pick up some of the ultimate compound and try it. So how aggresive is the ultimate compound? vids on youtube seem to make it out as a med cut . my biggest concern is always cutting through the clear coat

whats your experience with it ?

If you can hang you fingernail on the scratch forget it. Normally you would use a rotary buffer for this sort of work, I use 3M 05973. You should be concerned, you are not removing the scratch you are removing the surrounding clear to the level of the scratch, a body shop can touch up clear with no problem as long as its not burned through, it not really a DIY job.

Use a DA and the Ultimate Compound, I've removed some nasty trail rash from my Jeep with it. Trav is right, if you can feel it with your nail then it's kinda there unless you get a paintjob, but you can really make it harder to see.

Don't use a rotary without experience, you can do serious damage that way. Get some somewhat aggressive foam pads.

Meg's UC is a wonderful product for us DIY'ers with DA polishers. You will not burn through the clear coat using it with a DA.

Also, the connotation that "compound" imparts is not really applicable to this product IMO. It's more like a strong polish. The worst I have ever seen it do is leave behind some mild compounding swirls which were then easily taken out with some regular polish.

It is designed for hand or machine application. Trying to do a complete vehicle by hand is a fool's errand.
From Meguiar's website:

Safe and effective on clear coat and single stage paint, and can be applied by Hand or Dual Action Polisher like Meguiar's® MT300 Dual Action Polisher.

As I understand it, Megs Ultimate Compound is essentially M105 in a smaller bottle, for consumer users. If you're using a DA with it, it will be nearly impossible to burn through your paint, as long as you use it right. I used it on my Fusion many years ago, and it did an amazing job of cleaning up years of spider web swirls. Finished with Megs Ultimate Polish and Megs Tech 2.0. Great stuff.

I can't comment on the technical details but all I know is UC (and UP) are excellent products.

wet sand with 1200 or 1500 then polish with the Ultimate compound, as long as the scratches aren't through the paint.

He's worried about a compound being too aggressive, so your advice is to wetsand?

SMH.

He has scratches that wont polish out. That's how I'd fix it. Done it many times. If he isn't comfortable doing it a body shop will.

When I worked in the auto section at Canadian Tire I know this was a super-popular product.

I had a couple of customers who showed me pics of it having being used on weather/neglected finishes, and they looked great after (if you believe this is what they showed me).

Ultimate Compound and Polish can't be beat. If you don't have a practiced hand, you will need to follow up after the compound to refine the finish.

Nothing special compared to the Turtle Wax line, again. I too bought into all the hype of this product. It's a good super FINE polish only. Nothing special at all. If you see safe for clear coats, that will tell you it's not aggressive at all.
