Sweet - when I don't need to work for the man anymore I'm gonna hovel up some place like that.

My only requirement is that the place not be so dame hot I roast my brawls 8 months out of the year.

Yikes, some compromises there WRT crime rates etc.

Still nice to take up and reuse some empty houses after, say, a major industry moves out.

Ohhh I assumed it's rural

It's not even a DMZ where those prices are. It's literally a live combat zone in some areas. I'd take some areas of Bagdad before Reading. That's a favorite nesting place for semi-illegal Dominicans that are escaping the harsh Dominican justice system. They manage to get to PR and there they get legal papers to enter the USA. The police are afraid to actually pursue crime ..they just investigate the aftermath. It's a shame too. Lots of rich history there all going to ......

I hear the chemical smells and spilled chemicals from meth labs permate things so badly that places can't be cleaned up sometimes.

I think you could find better prices than that in places like western Nebraska. Genuinely nice people and low crime too. And it's rural.

The city of Pittsburgh's median home price is $64,500. That folks is probably the highest median price you will ever see again. With 4100 people 1.3% leaving every year since 2000 the prices will only go down from there. They always say the average is $134K but that includes all suburbs and most of the outlying counties. No one wants that dirty little secret to get out. 1950 640K residents, 1990 375K residents, 2000 335K residents, 2005 316K residents. OOP's did I let the cat out of the bag?

Good thing that we keep our boarders open. There are lots of other places where houses will become cheaper.

I was going to say "You can say that again", but noticed you already had.

That wouldn't buy you a shoe box here. Sydney median house price is $523,000 which is a decrease. In my suburb in the ACT it is $405,000. Perth median grew a staggering 36.6% since June 2005 with top end city Darwin second with an increase of 20.5% for the last 12 months. Yes Aussie real estate is hotter than ever. I couldn't afford to upgrade from our two bedroom townhouse even though I'd get $350,000 for it. Blame all the rich Americans and Brits and others moving here for the lopsided market.

L@@k what we and the Brits have done for you

We've given you USA status. A country so covetted that even you can't afford to live there. Heck, if you weren't an island, perhaps you too could have a domestic in every house, your own personal gardner, and millions just begging to do all your dirty work while you lounge around in a leisurely lifestyle as an advantaged citizen of the free world just peeling off a few hundred $$ bills to take care of incidentals as they arrise.

"Sydney median house price is $523,000"

I guess you guys down under are doing quite well to afford these type of residences and I am happy you are. I sincerely express my thanks for Australia supporting the US efforts.

I sure don't have $523,000 for a median house. I don't know how the average family pays a mortgage on that. Techo i work with is looking at a $500,000 home here in Canberra and I know for sure he earns about half what I do. People pay millions in Sydney for weatherboard wrecks if they happen to be near the water. A lot of mortgagee in possesion this last 12mths and growing. Has to end somewhere. Oh and I have my own personal gardener, my wife!
