In my time around different shops I've always paid attention to what the little repair shops around here use for filters and oil. In our area the predominant parts chain is Auto Value and many of the shops around here use theif filters (Purolator rebadged) and oil (Ashland made) for their customer changes. Another shop I know of use Advance's oil and filters.

I just wondered what others have observed in their local area?

My local shop (privately owned, not a chain) uses Valvoline oil and a filter I've never heard of. It appears to be made the same as a Supertech filter however. They have changed my oil twice while doing another repair and I got the same type both times with 2 different cars.

Carquest oil filters at the two shops I've been to. The Shell Service station I assume uses Formula Shell and the local tire shop uses AGIP oil.

This was before I entered the magical world of changing my own oil.

Tires Plus/Firestone uses filters built by Champion labs, except in applications where that filter is not yet available. Then they get their filter at a store like NAPA or Carquest. Their gasoline 5w30 and 5w30 syn is made by Kendall, as well as their multi-vehicle ATF. When 5w20, 15w40, or 20w50 dino was needed, the generic from the parts store was ordered, if it was available. If synthetic other than 5w30 was needed, Mobil1 was ordered.

At Allied Tire, all conventional oil was Exxon Superflo, and all Synthetic was Mobil1. All our filters were labeled "TRUST" and were built by Wix.

my guy is all carquest, presumably b/c they're closest or on good terms.

they have a 2 case minimum purchase, so their pickup trucks are always driving around dropping off 2 cases. Be more efficient if he got a bulk tank. all he uses is dino 5w30 unless he has a real good (diesel) excuse for otherwise.
