Every 10,000 miles or so a new issue crops up with this wretched car. The latest problem -at 71,000 miles- is coolant loss. Over the last 10,000 miles I've noticed that the heap is losing @8oz. of coolant every 5,000 miles. I have a used oil analysis performed at every oil change(5,000 mile OCI) and no coolant has been found in the oil. I've checked every hose connection/fitting and all are dry with no dried coolant residue to be found. Ditto for the radiator cap. What else should I check before I stick a rag in the fuel filler and light it?

all kidding aside did you check the water pump.... sometimes they develop a seepage problem maybe a couple of seal tabs would work we use them in every single engine we rebuild

The external headgasket leak on my Saturn started out with a small amount of coolant loss every year, but after a few years it suddenly resulted in needing to top off the coolant on a weekly basis.
As it turned out, the coolant was leaking from the headgasket and it was instantly evaporating once it touched the hot engine block, which is why I never saw any evidence of a leak until it became large, and at that point I saw massive staining.
I added 1 full bottle of Bar's Leak Liquid Aluminum sealer to the surge tank (for you, probably radiator) and after a few hundred miles the coolant leak was sealed. It has been 1300+ miles since and the car has not lost any coolant at all. If you are unable to find the leak, I would suggest adding a bottle of Bar's Leak Liquid Aluminum.

try a couple of seal tabs they do work wonders and wont do anything adverse unless you used a lot of them...i put them in my own cars and the engines we rebuild

If it's leaking out onto the floor, and given the conditions you stated, it is most definitely the thermostat.
Change it and you should be fine. Don't go to a stealership, they're going to rape you for an hour's worth of labor on an $80 OEM part.

any of the seal tabs you break them up and put them into the top radiator hose and drive the car for 10 or more miles after topping off the coolant...let me know how it works

In 72,000 miles I've replaced the LF strut, the turbo, the variable valve timing actuator, and the EGR valve. Currently the rear shocks are blown and awaiting replacement. The first three were warranty repairs but the last two are on my nickel. And did I mention that the front pads and discs are as expensive as the ones for an E46 M3? So yes, reliability is not a selling point...
