My wife's 17 year old cousin lost the key to his 2000 Mazda 626. For some odd reason , our local Mazda dealer said they can't make him a new one.

A local repair shop has given him an estimate of $400 to replace the key & either program the new key or re-program the car

Anyway, do any of you BITOGers know of a cheaper way to have a new key made for this car? If so, the kid & his family would appreciate it very much.

Thanks in advance for any & all suggestions.

Was the key something special with a chip in it for theft deterent? If just a regular key, any locksmith worth his salt could make a new one using the door lock as a guide. Either way, I would find another Mazda dealership. The dealer should be able to look-up by VIN and get a new key.

If it's anything like this ...the dealer is his only hope

It's the same with my wife's jeep. If I had both the original keys ..I could program a NEW uncoded key since the PCM would assume that the new key, in the presense of the two original (they don't have the same code), was an authorized duplicate.

In my case, if I had not had both OEM issued keys AND an ebay source for codable blanks, it would have been $90 from the dealer.

I found a company online called streetkeys.com I have no idea how legit they are. The little bit of research I've done seems to indicate that they are legit.

They claim to be able to come to the kid's location & make a new key for his Mazda on-site.

Total cost = $200.

Have any of you ever heard of or dealt with this company?
