Cut an oil filter apart for the first time after the 160k oil change on my Mazda6. No issues with the engine or car at all, just curious. This is what I found, quite clean with specks of carbon. From what I'm reading, this is totally normal. Posting up here for any comments.

I could not evaluate the contents at the bottom of the can, as I used a dremel to open and the dirt inside was from the abrasive wheel. Off to Amazon to buy an oil cutter for better results next time.

Looks really good, similar to the ones from my xB & Corolla. I wish the ones from the Express looked that good!
Thanks for the comparison. Next up will be the filter from my garden tractor, due for change after the last mow of the season this week, and next vehicle will be the Yukon. Will be good to keep an eye on metal components with lifter failures common on the 5.3s.

The '77 F-100 should be an interesting comparison.

Looks good. The carbon you see in the creases of the pleats is pretty typical. It's made of the larger carbon bits that are too big to penetrate into the depth of the media.

What actually clogs a filter is the smaller stuff that's captured deeper inside the media. This stuff will darken the media as the filter loads up, since it's also mostly made of carbon generally. Just based on the colour of the media, I'd guess that there was a good amount of life left in it.

Looks like a pretty short filter (unless you've got the hands of Andre the Giant). If it's a 6607, I'd consider using the taller 7317 if there's room for it. If you stick with the stock size, I'd probably keep using OEM filters if they're made by Tokyo Roki. They're very good IMO.

I had to cut off about 1/4" on each end to get it to unroll from the plastic molded retainer, so it's slightly taller than shown but yes, it is a small filter. Good to know about the bigger filter, not sure if it would clear the air dam or not.

Yes I was happy with the media as shown - but I wouldn't gamble on skipping filter replacement every other change, especially with the size of the filter.

Even if it barely fits, keep in mind that oil filters can get hot enough to melt some types of plastic. Also, if the filter sticks out below the engine, a taller filter could be more likely to get damaged by road debris or something, and a punctured filter will likely destroy an engine. It's not worth the risk unless you're sure that won't be an issue, especially if you're set on changing the filter every 6-7k miles.

The Mazda economy filter was intact with a nice pressure relief valve. I try to get the non-economy version but I guess the dealership slipped it past me this time. Will be interesting to compare the construction of the Napa Gold in a few months.

My Dealership doesn't even carry the ROKI MIJ filters anymore. They said they can order them, but all they have in stock is the Mazda Value filter (Made in Mexico.)

I got a case of the ROKI MIJ filters off a dealership in Ohio (eBay store.)

All three Mazda filters appear identical inside. The numbers usually indicate the country of origin for the filter. Denso makes all three IRC.
I use Fram 7317, it's the oversize one for most Asian brands.
