Mazda CX-30 vs Subaru Crosstrek (XV)

Mazda hands down when comparing to the Crosstrek.

-Available turbo option
-Better HP/torque
-Easier to work on
-6 speed transmission

Al, you have way too much air in your tires. Either that or you tire gauge is an optimist.
That pressure will pound the suspension components, make for twitchy steering, and I have always seen centre tread wear at pressures approaching 37psig (2.7bar) on any compact and subcompact cars. This is not a rear tyre on a 911

Try a bit less pressure closer to 34 COLD - but take the air out over a few days. The carcass will distort otherwize with a rapid deflation

Subaru’s awd system is the one to beat. Many comparisons on YouTube comparing them all in off-road and snow conditions. I’ve personally had snow over the hood on my Subaru and taken it up mountain sides to fishing spots. The real limiting factor is ground clearance.

Plenty of other awd systems like the ones mentioned here that are better at the track. Most don’t buy a Subaru for the track.

The Impreza RS while far from perfect is one of the best AWD cars for the money you can buy.
Just looked at one.

This vehicle appears to be slotted as the new Non-Turbo WRX wagon option. But 30 grand?! Too much.

I see Kids around here are going bankrupt for the hideous but killer Hyundai Elantra N instead. But no AWD there.
We increased min wage for this!!!?? Car poor-ness?

For me No Stick = No Fun = Nope!

Yeah I think the only manual you can get is in the WRX and BRZ. I have to say though the CVT is nice and smooth.

Do Subarus have torque vectoring yet? Not talking about the front:rear split torque bias. They didn't beforehand, it doesn't seem like they changed much with the STi but I've been out of that game for 10 years.

Mitsu's S-AWC systems have active torque bias; center and rear diffs are both active. The rear brakes can also help with the vectoring but can be manually turned off with a button. Shame their only cars with them now is the outlanders which is basically a reversed version on the evo.

Forgot the Impreza RS side shot. Added it to above post #25

Our Crosstrek Premium was only 25k with the WRX 6 speed. And no plastic "fall apart" electric thermostat from the 2.5L (I hope)
Subaru: Do NOT reverse engineer cooling systems BMW please!

During the epidemic I looked to buy Impreza stick 5 door . Advert for $18K all day, But Subaru Indiana was sending out some poorly made cars, Drove three sample and did not find a good one in the bunch. Ended up with the Ford Eco 2L. Very Good car for 1 person
under $17K out the door. So $30K is shocking unless it's bringing something BIG to the party.
It's no new 2023 LT1 Camaro 455HP for 36K. Yep almost signed for that one. They all gone now, sigh.
The only excitement I would stretch the budget for new.

My old highschool buddy just bought his brothers low mileage Audi A6 3.0l supercharged Quattro for 6 grand.
So reference that.

You’re getting up there in age, Ken. This Impreza RS is still cheaper than a base 2002 Mustang GT. And it’s AWD and much better appointed!

Good write-up Al.

Subarus do historically have great visibility and are well thought out in the cabin. Seat comfort is subjective. Of my 2012 Legacy, 2014 XV Crosstrek and 2016 Forester, the Forester had the most comfortable seats and was the most comfortable and utilitarian of the bunch. My XV Crosstrek (back when they were called "XV") had the most miserable 5MT I had ever owned. It got me out of the MT game all together for a daily driver as that is what I had mostly driven prior in my life.

What I found common of the 3 I owned. #1 The stock tires were absolutely miserable in winter driving. So bad it made the AWD worthless for my driving. All had to be fitted with winter tires to be decent in the snow. #2 was I found the HVAC systems to be marginal in all 3. Mediocre heat output in the cold of winter and barely adequate A/C in the summer.

I've never owned a Mazda, but I did very much enjoy the 2021 CX-5's I looked at and test drove last year.

I have kept my pressure at for a long time. Yea. Probably isn't the best but its what I do.

I don't see any excitement in a cvt impreza with the rackety 2.5L.
I have higher standard for a sports compact.

Our new 2023 Crosstrek premium was only $25K I see no value here in the RS. And again there is the issue with the plastic E thermostats (TCV) all failing on the 2.5 -
at least according to MrSubaru1387.

I can buy any car I want - up to say 1/4M - but I am not nuts enough to do so.

I agree, except for Quattro, X-drive, and SH-AWD ;)

But seriously...isn't the WRX the only Subaru that has actual torque vectoring and doesn't just use brakes for minimizing slippage? The systems listed above are legitimate mechanical torque-vectoring systems.
My Mazda CX-5 AWD touring 2013 had an excellent all-wheel drive system. Was a beast on Bridgestone Blizzak WS90s in the snow and on ice.

My Mazda CX-5 AWD touring 2013 had an excellent all-wheel drive system. Was a beast on Bridgestone Blizzak WS90s in the snow and on ice. Suspension and handling were amazing for an SUV, which I generally don't prefer but I thought would be best for ubering. Among crossovers I've driven at a low to medium price point, only Ford Escape matches Mazdas nimble on road handling quality.

Reliability on the Mazda is amazing, from what I've heard with the engines failing and sometimes the transmissions failing on Subarus, not so with Subaru! If you want reliability, generally choose Mazda, Honda or Toyota vehicles.
